Hello all, I'm nearly sure there is a thread here somewhere on replacing the macbook Hard drive but I can't seem to access the search funtion on these boards, so I just have to start a thread.

I have a 2.0ghz macbook, core 2 duo, its the 2nd gen macbook,
It currently has an 80gb HDD, but I'd like to know what type of HDD's it will accept and if anyone has info regarding switching HDD's I'd appreciate it.

You need a 2.5" SATA HDD.
Apple have an official PDF (direct download) that should help you.
You can also use Carbon Clone Copy or Disk Utility to copy the entire hard disk to an external drive prior to exchanging.

ive swapped mine out, i suggest a 100gb hitachi 7200rpm one ! the only requirement is 2.5" SATA

surely if you are going to replace an 80gb HD you would want more than a 100gb?

not necuussarily, i had to replace mine as it died , and i had a 60gb one in there (original 1.83ghz macbook)

160Gb @ 5400RPM is the price point for laptop drives at the moment. 120Gb @ 7200RPM for slightly more alternatively. Have a look at the current stock on Komplett.

Cheeers!! now I just gotta decide if a 160gb drive@7200rpm is worth that extra bit of cash?

Not really -- for the price difference (~€75) you can buy an additional 250Gb 7200rpm 3.5" external drive for those tasks that benefit from a faster spindle speed.

i'd go for samsung or seagate drives tbh, had two hitachi's (3.5" drives) die on me.

I second that, but for different reasons:
    • Seagate drives have a nice 5yr warranty
    • Samsung drives are generally the quietest

I've never used a samsung drive as far as I know, but i've always found fujitsu to be very quite, seagate a little noisier... Thanks for the advice and I'm now swaying towards Samsung.

Just annoyed and needed a place to vent...
