does it support divx or what has to be done to get it to play em?

There is no divx plugin, the 504 should play divx already, as long as they are in .avi container, divx 5 plays nicest wih the 504.

Can you find out for sure what format the video files are? where were they obtained for example?

I have a 404 and occasionally divx files don't play because they had aac or ac3 audio. A quick (well slow) run through ffmpegx does the business.
