How is the magnetic field in an electric motor generated?

I'll avoid the smarmy "how long is a piece of string..." reply...

But it really does depend on what you mean exactly. Do you mean the magnetic field of the rotor or the stator, and what type of motor are you talking about. Is it a DC motor, induction, synchronous etc?

The magnetic field of the stator can be formed from a permanent magnet, with curved pole faces, with the rotor fitting neatly inside it. This is generally used for low torque DC machines. However you can also use a coil with a current passing through it to generate the field. If you use a 3-phase system you can have a very efficient arrangment whereby no brushes or otherwise any physical contact exists between the rotor and the stator. This is an example of an induction machine.

Let us know if you want any more detail on any of the above...
