DVB-T line of sight? Receiver recommendations?

    All,

My TV options are limited (No NTL) and I dont really want to put a satellite dish again. Analog TV reception is crap. DVB-T seems to be the way to go in the near future so I have a few questions:

Do you need to have line of sight for DVB-T? I am really close to Three Rock but a bit concealed by trees/mountains.

Can you recommend a future-proof DVB-T receiver (HDTV and all) that does recording? Antenna? and where to get them?

    Thanks!

    Gerald.

HD MPEG4 receivers aren't that easily available yet, nor is anyone certain what standard RTÉ are going to stick to, so there's no "future-proof" STB for now, and definately nothing which records too.

it's not line of sight though so you don't have to worry about that. I wouldn't worry about future proofing either, although imo there is little doubt that HD transmissions will be mpeg4 when and if they start to happen. The issue is how they will be coded and whether any reciever you pick will have the required security features that may be used.

There are quite a few recording DVB-T boxes and some do MPEG4 also. But a lot of money, I'd expect them to be about 1/3rd price next year.

We don't have an Official finalized DTT service yet, so I would hold of spending more than 30 or 40 Euro that might go down the drain.

DVB-T uses similar frequencies to ordinary TV. Unlike analogue TV, ghosting (reflections) can actually improve the signal.

Thanks guys for the replies :-)

    Can you recommend aerials/cables/shops?

Best box at the moment is the Humax DVB-T PVR it can record up to 160gig and the reception is the best around.

Don't worry about future proofing as the DVB-T standard is the same here as in the U.K. and is E.U. approved.

Best shops for aerials here are Maplin as the others are rip off merchants.

Only HD box worth its salt is the Humax HDCI2000 which has already been updated to receive the BBC but forget about HD here as there is no finance to upgrade the system but with SD there is no problem.

HD could be broadcast today with no problems, no 'system' needs to be upgraded.

HD could be broadcast today with no problems, no 'system' needs to be upgraded. There will be a trial of it as part of the DTT trial this summer.
