    few questions:
    Which Mac?
What region is it's DVD set to?
    Which region is the DVD?
Can you play the DVDs normally?

Some of the recent MacBook pro DVD's will only allow DVD's from the region they are configured to be used. i.e. region 2 set in the DVD player, ends up not being able to even look at any other (e.g. region 1) DVD's

I have used both MacTheRipper and Handbrake and had very few problems. The main question is are you able to play the particular DVD on your Macbook? MacTheRipper is easy to use and gives you a Video_TS folder from which you can then burn onto another disc to watch it. Handbrake I've used for moving DVDs onto my iPod, this program will create .avi's which you should be able to watch in most players. If you're looking for instructions on how to use them try Google.

I use both without any problems.

Are you getting the same error messages with every DVD or a you just attempting it with the one DVD. Also, as mentioned earlier, check the DVD's region code.
