Wordpress, 'pretty' permalinks & .htaccess

I'm using the default permalinks on my blog and I have started categorising a lot more of it and doing a general tidy up.

What I'm trying to do is change from the default permalink /?p=N to /%category%/%postname%/

It tells me the update is done but when I click on a link in my blog I get a page not found error. It doesn't seem to be writing the changes to the .htaccess file.

    Any thoughts on this?

I'm posting here as I know a few people have wordpress blogs and may know the solution.

Has wordpress the right permissions to write to the .htaccess file?

Try setting the permissions on .htaccess to lowest security (just to test, not for good) and see if the change works then

Having just read your query ... you'll want to investigate if mod rewrite is installed on your server :) if so you'll have to make a few changes to the .htaccess file
