External HDD Failure

My friends external hard drive has messed up. He had pictures and videos that he recorded from his digital camera. He didnt have backups and he is devastated at the loss.

When I plug in the hdd the led power and activity leds work as expected, no notable sounds to suggest physical damage. The logical drive doesnt straight away in My Computer and autoplay thing doesnt crop up straight away but after about 2-5 minutes it does but (as F: instead of G:).

When I go into Computer Management it takes its time to display the drives when the ext hdd is connected, "Connecting to the Logical Disk Manager Service...". But again after the 2-5 minutes after connecting it does.

When it does appear, see attachment.

It looks like everything is lost but when I try to go into the drive i get an error, see 2nd attachment.

I really hope to recover the files, the drive isnt important. Thanks in advance.
