They Call this Nutrition Advice

I have to share my experience yesterday where I attended a health screening. I wont name the company who did the screening however part of the session included an examination of my diet with them giving me 'expert' advice.

I have a really good diet thanks to Transform's guidance (he is my husband:D !) so I expected to know a bit about what they were going to tell me...

The nurse took out a plate which was divided in three.. The 3 sections were Protein with a picture of a chicken on it, Fruits and Vegetables with pictures of broccoli, lettuce, apples etc and then Carbs with a picture of Rice, Pasta and a Potato.

I was then advised that my diet did not have enough carbs in it as I did not have one of rice, pasta or potato with my lunch or dinner.
I pointed out that I ate a flapjack or muesli during they day which contained oats hence carbs to which she replied 'Do they?' and then I also asked her what she thought about the carbs in all the vegetables and fruit i eat... to which I was told there are NO carbs in fruit and veg!! Yes folks there are no carbs in fruit and veg!..

 not surprised at all. When I visit my GP I normally educate her on the latest trends in a certain medical area and when i see her again she's like 'you we so right what you said the last time' after she has researched it her self.

    Thats shocking advise !!

It is shocking to hear that 'professinals' are giving advice like this. Did you report this or make a complaint?

It is important that you do because up until this person met you Mrs. Transform, they may have advised hundreds of unsuspecting people that they had no carbs in their diets...

A colelague of mine informed me last week that she is off carbs as she wants to lose weight. The weather was quite warm here last week so she then asked me (2 minutes later) if I wanted an ice-cream as she was going to get one!

I explained it to her and told her to seek proper advice on a weight-loss diet but now I see that perhaps even some professionals need some proper advice...although anyone who thinks that ice-cream will help them lose weight needs a lot of help. :)

why i cant understand actually is that if you are in great shape, healthy and eat well why the hell anyone would advise you on what you should be eating.

As for not knowing their stuff on the nutritional value of food thats just crazy, i mean fair enough not everyone is so up on it but then if they arent they shouldnt work giving out such advise for a living!!

Yes, yes they are! Also, chicken does not contain protein as it's poultry, not meat :D

I did tell her she was wrong to which I was told 'well that is our advice from our professional nutritionist' so if you dont agree with it you can feel free to ignore it... I repeated that she was incorrect with her information but just felt it was better to move on as she was not taking it in.

At the outset I did tell her I did not need the nutrition part of it but I think she felt compelled to be able to tick the box to say she had done it!

Dom and I have discussed this and I will be writing in to them but in the meantime just had to post!

(Sorry R3nu4l - I have mucked up the quote functionality!)

This kind of stuff should be taught to everyone at primary school level.

Think it will now that Hannifan is back in the same role? Not a chance.

There should also be more emphasis on physical education in schools as two hours per week is a joke.

im from the other side of the world and the education people have in general on nutrition is unbelievable - croissonts and scones are good for you!! also to lose weight skip breakfast, soup for lunch and salad for dinner. They do need to put some form of education in schools but also educate the experts in the health and fitness industry - alot of instructors ive met knows nutrition basics at most, obviously there are exceptions

I'm a secondary school student and we get 45mins PE a week (one classes worth), but in primary school we barely got 30/35 mins - now thats a joke.

just as you mention schools I have to say my daughters school is very good in encouraging diet and fitness.

Her class (senior infants) has two gym sessions per week and no junk food (fizzy drinks, sweets, crisps etc.) allowed in school. Only on Friday can they bring in a treat.

Teacher had a 'fruit day' recently where all kids had a to bring in two pieces of fruit and the teacher brought in some to the not so common ones: pomegranate etc. and all the kids sampled each others fruit.
