Buying a MGB GT

    deckie27,

The MG BGT is a great 1st classic - I should know, I bought mine 2 years ago. I had/have very limited mechanical knowledge and was nervous about buying a classic for that reason. I shouldn't have worried. The MG is easy/cheap to maintain. There's not a huge amount to them mechanically.

Talk to the MG Enthusiast Club of Ireland http://www.mgireland.com. I got one of the guys there to give my car the once over before I bought - it cost buttons & gave me great piece of mind.

The main thing is to ensure the body is good - surface rust is treatable, but sills etc will cost (unless you're handy with a welder). Just about everything (except the drivetrain tunnel!) is available new from the UK.

    Best of luck

Check carzone for some nicer examples that that white one, overdive is good as you'll have 4 speed box. The chrome bumpers model is the one to go for if you can. For more serious money our very own franksm has this beauty

agreed a great car and a very useable classic - but you've got to watch out for rust - usual spots are the sills and wheel arches MG's are notorious for it but if you can get a good one they're well worth it. stick with something over 30 years old otherwise the 1.8 engine will cost you a bomb on tax, chrome bumpers are more desirable and a webasto sunroof is the business if you can get one. Also if you do buy one from UK make sure it has a full MOT as the sills are checked as part of the test. These cars can deteriorate rapidly over a year if they're not looked after so one that's got an MOT expiring soon could be a lot of trouble (trust me I know this from experience!)
