Hi I had a very sudden recent bereavement in my family my uncle died. I had to take a day and a half off work because the funeral was in the UK and had to fly over and back. I have been told that the day and a half has been taken out of my annual leave. Just wondering if this is normal practice?

Bull**** - there is such a thing as compassionate leave - you should be entitled to it...

A lot of companies will give you a day or two off in this circumstance and not take it out your holidays. I know the company I work for is fine about things like that. But where my partner works, he would have one of 2 options: take it as a holiday or have his wages docked.

    Depends on company policy.
Some companies have compassionate leave but it can depend
on the relationship to the deceased.
    i.e. Parent/Sibling 1-2 days ... Other family ... 1/2 -1 day etc.

Most places have their own policy.

I was going to say that you should be covered under Force Majeure leave but that seems to only cover immediate relatives so your uncle wouldnt count.

As Beano says, compassionate leave, better known as Force Majeure, doesn't cover extended family.

Unfortunately companies have to think about such things in a heartless manner, and they're not obliged to pay you to attend funerals. So you can have an upaid day off, or have it taken out of your annual leave.

Many companies will provide paid time off in their policies, but it's totally at the company's discretion.
