    Hi folks,

I know a bundle of you have or had this lens.

If you have a Canon camera with a 1.6 crop factor (ie, no full framers), can you post up your widest shot with it for me to have a look see? I'm in the market for a wide angle lens at the moment and this seems to be the handiest...I have a 17-55 kit and it's nowhere near wide enough for my purposes...and before I go rambling into town to test and acquire, I'd like a good idea of what I'd be getting out of it, or whether it'd be worth my while saving a little more dosh and getting as far down as 8 if I could. Also seriously considering a 50mm too but I'll worry about that separately.

Fireman's post about the 10-22 might be of interest to you... ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

it might but he hasn't posted it anywhere yet and I don't know how much money he wants for it.

anyway, I still need examples of the wide end of the lens with a 1.6crop factor sensor...Anyone?

Do a search on flickr and look at the EXIF data for particular shots of interest to see the camera it was taken with. That's what I always do when considering a lens purchase

    Calina,

I have the 10-20 Sigma wide angle on my 20D and its great. I really like the lens and its super sharp for the shots I took with it, well impressed with it.

PM me with your contact details including email addy as I am looking to sell mine soon and I can send across a variety of shots taken.

    Mike

I have the 10-20 on my 350d, and I was able to stand directly under the Eiffel tower only about 40 feet away and get it all in. I'm constantly impressed by the lens, and next to my nifty fifty, it's probably my most used lens.

Ned, that photograph is really sweet. I need to be playing with 30m kitelines so that one actually sells the lens to me.

Mike, I've pm'd you. Are you coming to the zoo?

I traded mine into berminghams about a month ago and havent seen it in their 2nd hand lenses for sale section yet - they might have one ready to go if give em a shout. Course they might have sold it already as they dont tend to come up 2nd hand too often.

I was going to drop into Berminghams anyway because even new, they seemed to have the best price for the lens locally.

actually Mark, I wanted a fisheye first but i'm going for the wide angle instead on the grounds that i'll use it more...

but dammit...this is suddenly a very expensive hobby.

okay, Berminghams don't have either new or second hand at the moment.

Thanks, yes it's Poolbeg, so you know how little space there is around the end of that. The lens is wide enough to take it all in.

I bought the lens in Conn's last year. At the time Bermingham's was the cheapest (but Conn's was closer :o ). I mentioned it to the salesman in Conn's that I could get it in Bermingham's for 465 euros and he matched that. It's worth a try..

Have you considered the sigma full frame wide angle?
I think its the 12-24. It's suppose to have less distortion than the 10-20.

I had the 10-20 myself ,very light and easy to carry.

Edit : I've completely gone off the whole small sensor lens thing ,it's just a gimmick to make money.

I remember reading a review when I was trying to figure out what to buy that compared them head to head and came to the conclusion that it had some nasty chromatic aberation in the corners (I think it was on Luminous Landscape, though not 100% sure at this stage)

The 10-20 is a great lens, I love it. Cropped sensors may disappear a couple of years down the line, but I don't think so, and if you decide to go full frame, the lens should hold it's resale value well (the 12-24 is considerably more expensive)

Here're a few examples, click on any of them to go to the flickr page:

    Okay,

having had a look, and noting that the 10-20 is for a cropped sensor and under the circumstances, I think I'll go for it.

JMcL, they are lovely photographs. I feel wholly inadequate at the sight of them.

Not strictly true in the canon EF-S sense. The EF-S lenses for the cropped sensor cameras will not physically fit on full sensor bodies. The Sigma 10-20 will fit on a full framer, but will display vignetting up to about 14-15mm

    Totally correct!!

So am I right in saying that if you stick to the longer end of the Sigma, you don't get vignetting (or at least you end up with something you can deal with)? That's not too shabby!

    Okay,

I have to thank everyone who responded to this, particularly those who supplied some photographs. I've decided to buy the lens. Not sure yet (mike - check your email...) where, but I will get it soon.

I'm interested in the fact that it is for a cropped sensor in that I really need the width and the 18mm on the kit wasn't really wide enough for my liking. I'm not (yet) much of an expert on shooting at the wide end of the range - anyone around my photos will know I spend a considerable amount of time with some very big zooms. I know I benefit from the cropped sensor on the zoom end. My main concern will be that there are plans in place for a 1D next year and according to the techspec on that, it has a slightly smaller crop factor (1.3 rather than 1.6).

I'm hugely impressed by a lot of the photographs I have seen. I fully expect that I will be spending a lot of time learning how best to get photographs out of this lens, but the overwhelming impression I have is that this is a razor sharp lens and if I can get the positioning of the shot right (not going to be the easiest side of things) I could get some nice things out of it.

I bought it. Bloody horrible day to be out testing any sort of a lens and I have a nice steep learning curve ahead of me.

si, want a look at your 1D the next time we're in the same place if you don't mind.

Congrats!! Have fun. Personally I get a bit sea sick when I see my own feet while looking through a viewfinder. Looking good so far though.

Well ware Calina, was one of my favourite until I sold it! Was very sharp, hella wide, and had fast AF. Good luck with it!

Never heard any word from Drummerboy since then - I presume he's happy or he woulda let me know! :)

One thing I love about this lens at the wide end (well, applies to any 10mm lens I guess - laws of physics and all that) is the enormous depth of field. At f8 and if you manually focus just a smidgen past the 1m mark, the DOF will go from about 45cm to infinity

** digs up old thread **

I have a short-notice business trip to China coming up and I really want to bring a superwide lens with me, so I'm looking for a UK/EU based supplier for this lens - ebay or otherwise. It'll be going on my trusty Nikon D50, and mostly used (I hope, and free time permitting!) for landscapes and night time cityscapes. At present the widest lens I have is the Nikon 18-55 kit lens which just doesn't cut it.

    Can anyone make any recommendations?

    Thanks.

Err... what about the Sigma 10-20? I think Nikons superwide offering is 12-24 (though I stand to be corrected on this). The extra 2mm at the wide end makes a huge difference. Also, the Sigma can be surprisingly be had competitively from bricks and mortar shops here in Ireland (albeit probably in Dublin - if you're up for a day trip), and I'm talking about competitive versus EU web prices. Look at Camera Exchange, Berminghams (€499), or Conns. Gunns don't stock Sigma unfortunately

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Eh, I was talking about the Sigma 10-20 :) Nikon's offering is indeed 12-24 and costs about €1000 (or about 800-850 from ebay Hong Kongers) so its out of my budget.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I'm impressed at Conn's being cheaper than pixmania.
