I've posted a related thread in computer section, but I'm puting it here because it may help to com up with a different sort of solution to my problem.

We have a few open access computers at work that people use for checking emails, etc.
We also have a moron who thinks it's funny to change the dektops to stupid/'funny'/offensive/rude/nerdy images. And the guy does this all day long, everytime he visits the desktop.
    It's driving people mental.

Anyway, is this a common problem? Whats the solution?
Don't want to get boss involved, but want to stop this moron.

Get a pic of said moron, photoshop some choice comedy phrase relating to his questionable parenthood/sexuality/mental ability into the picture and then set it as the desktop on every machine in the office...

Going out on a limb here with this radical idea but try telling him to stop cos it's annoying everyone.

Tell the boss. It's creating an uncomfortable working environment.

Or set up a Wile E. Coyote style 100ton weight above a computer and wait for hilarity to ensue.

Um, talk to him? If you see it as a problem, others probably do too.

(Yes; I just pasted the standard PI response. ¬_¬ )

Get your IT people to do a lock down on it. They can set a policy to stop people changing them. Bit like ours did when I was sending "net send messages"

"Your Key Board may have a virus. Please shut down and re start your PC to allow a full scan"

    I was bored.

If everyone knows he does it, start setting it to really homoerotic images while no one's around so everyone will assume it was him.

we have open access machines for the same purposes, but they're kept strictly segregated from the domain for security reasons.

    open access computers
    ....
    /offensive/rude/
Lawsuit waiting to happen, never underestimate the desire of some people to be offended, and they are never the people who deserve the compo.

If he's signed a contract with any sort of IT policy then he is half-way out the door by now. Check with HR perhaps.

What's gone wrong in the world?
Does nobody resort to physical violence anymore?

Some of the responses on here are class lol :D
It sounds like some strip out of the Beano:D

You could tell him direct, or tell the boss, but I think there are far better ways of catching him at his own game. A prankster deserves to be pranked!!!!!

I particularly like the suggestion that, since everyone knows it's him, put something choice up yourself and everyone will presume it's him! Then he'll have to publicly admit that he has done it in the past but that it wasn't him this time!

Obviously nothing offensive or whatever, that would defeat the purpose, but there is plenty you can do here with a bit of imagination that will catch him out and get your point across...

tis gettin a bit bad allright init, violence and intimidation, coupled with public Humiliation in front of his peer group, just make sure you have a patsy for the slaughter by HR later, allways a winner, plus you'll get loads off time of work for it

Its time we liberalised Gun laws

Send a group email to all the people that use the PCs and say (without pointing fingers) that if the issue persists that you will be contacting HR/IT to get them to investigate the matter ! The threat should be sufficient and you won't have to confront the idiot in question directly.

This seems like the best idea....also if it persists ask the boss to make a general announcement that this sort of stuff wont be tolerated etc. etc.....should sort it out and no-one gets blamed directly!

You can disable the ability to do this. It's simple and can be applied to a whole group of computers at once.

Assuming you're a member of I.T., then have someone (marketing or whoever) design a default desktop for the company, then apply it to all machines. Add a note to the I.T. policy that people are not permitted to change this (but disable their ability to change it on the open machines).

Do Both, as he might decide to find something else to piss people off with if you only get it blocked.

Edit the registry and set 1 to 0 or true to false. This might not work:

    Navigate to these two.
    HKCU\control panel\desktop HKU\.default\control panel\desktop

Or just set this as the GPO policy:

    Administrative Templateshide
    Control Panelhide
    Policy Setting
Prohibit access to the Control Panel
    Enabled
    Control Panel/Add or Remove Programshide
    Policy Setting
    Remove Add or Remove Programs
    Enabled
    Control Panel/Displayhide
    Policy Setting
    Prevent changing wallpaper
    Enabled
    Remove Display in Control Panel
    Enabled
    Control Panel/Printershide
    Policy Setting
Browse the network to find printers
    Disabled
    Prevent addition of printers
    Enabled
    Prevent deletion of printers
    Enabled
    Control Panel/Regional and Language Optionshide
    Policy Setting
Restrict selection of Windows menus and dialogs language
    Enabled
Restrict users to the following language: English

    Desktophide
    Policy Setting
Hide and disable all items on the desktop
    Enabled
Prevent adding, dragging, dropping and closing the Taskbar's toolbars
    Enabled
    Remove the Desktop Cleanup Wizard
    Enabled
    Desktop/Active Desktophide
    Policy Setting
    Active Desktop Wallpaper
    Enabled
    Wallpaper Name:
Example: Using a local path: C:\windows\web\wallpaper\home.jpg
Example: Using a UNC path: \\Server\Share\Corp.jpg
    Wallpaper Style: Center

    Policy Setting
    Allow only bitmapped wallpaper
    Enabled
    Disable Active Desktop
    Disabled
    Enable Active Desktop
    Enabled
    Allows HTML and JPEG Wallpaper

    Policy Setting
    Prohibit changes
    Enabled

I would also personally confront this guy too. And let him know if it happens again that something will be done about it.

When you are next talking to him pretend you don't know it's him changing the pictures and say:

"Some fùckwad keeps changing the desktop pictures for those machines"

If he keeps doing it, it's an admission of being a fùckwad, so you can call him a fùckwad without fear of legal reprisal... it's a win win situation
