NEW GAA DVD CELEBRATES MUNSTER HURLING

    THE PASSION PLAYS

The Ressurection of Munster Hurling 1994-2004

Starring some of the all time legends of the ‘best field game in the world’ - including Jimmy Barry Murphy (Cork), Nicky English (Tipperary), Paul Flynn (Waterford) , Anthony Daly (Clare), Steve McDonagh (Limerick) Tommy Dunne (Tipperary) plus special guests DJ Carey (Kilkenny) and best selling sports writer Denis Walsh.

Released nationwide next Friday June 15th The Passion Plays celebrates the Munster Hurling Final - one of the biggest days in Irish sport that both captures the imagination of GAA fans and enthrals serious sports fans across the world.

There have been many memorable games, magnificent teams and classic moments surrounding the Munster Hurling Final but the era between 1994 and 2004 was really unique. It was a period of intense competition when the province’s five hurling strongholds - Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford succeeded in capturing the prized title of Munster Hurling Champions. Ironically Kerry - the 6th county in Munster and the most successful football team in the country - have only ever won one title and that was in 1891!

The DVD concentrates on the epic years 1994 – 2004 that marked a major breakthrough for the traditionally supporting cast of Limerick, Clare and Waterford. The decade created new hurling stars, introduced new celebrity managers, innovative training methods and memorable finals. In 1995 Clare captured their first Munster title since 1932 - starting a powerful run that brought them huge support and success over the next few years. Waterford’s failures too were soon forgotten after brilliant wins in both 2002 (their first win since 1963) and the classic game against Cork in 2004 which is included in full as a bonus DVD.

‘Even though we also went on to win the All-Ireland, the day we all point to, and we all remember, was the Munster final victory,” said Clare captain Anthony Daly in 1995, the year he led his county to their first title in 63 years.

But Cork and Tipperary hadn’t disappeared and both responded to the challenges of Clare, Limerick and Waterford. This DVD tells the story of how this fascinating period unfolded in all its intense rivalry, contrasting style and exceptional hurling.

DVD 1 of THE PASSION PLAYS includes extensive and exclusive interviews with hurling icons of era - Jimmy Barry Murphy, Nicky English, Paul Flynn, Anthony Daly, Steve McDonagh, Tommy Dunne, DJ Carey and contributions from the author of the excellent book “Hurling: The Revolution Years”, Denis Walsh.

The documentary is produced and directed by Billy McGrath whose past credits include films with U2, The Pogues, David Bowie, Clannad, The Irish Soccer Team (Italia ’90) and RTE TV series Leagues Apart with Ardal O’Hanlon.

DVD 2 is the 2004 Munster Final between Waterford and Cork, regarded as one of the greatest Munster Finals and one of the most exciting games of hurling ever played. This match is the original RTE TV broadcast in full.

The Passion Plays is the 2nd DVD in a new GAA Classic series – the 1st The Royal Battle celebrated one of the most talked about and dramatic events in Irish sport when Dublin and Meath played a mammoth 4-match epic in the 1991 Leinster Football Championship. Due to the current Dublin versus Meath rivalry in 2007 The Royal Battle has been re launched and available nationwide.

Both ‘The Passion Plays’ and ‘The Royal Battle’ are distributed by Univeral.

This is an Official GAA licensed product produced by Sideline who are officially licensed to produce and release GAA content on DVD
