So you're on the bubble of a medium sized online MTT, you are the second smallest stack, about 5 BBs, it's folded to you and you are dealt JJ 2 spots before the button, there's 5 players still left to act, do you push and hope no one has picked up Queens, Kings or Aces or fold and hope someone gets knocked out before you get blinded away? :-/

If you are playing to get into the money - fold. This could happen where there are X tickets going that are all equal value. The SB and/or BB will probably call with Ax or K9+ here as well which gives you 70/30 to win the hand.

    Otherwise - SHOVE!

If finishing just inside the money means something to you. then your playing out of your bank roll.

if you want to go deep then you need to double up and its a shove. if some1 has AA,KK,QQ so be it but you gotta take a couple of coin flips now.

if its a satellite on the bubble youve go 5bbs with more than likely running antes so your screwed so i prolly shove in a sat too.

Not really, if you qualify for the WSOP through a $1.50 sat and make it too the bubble then i think folding is a given.

fair point. But lets say he pays $50 into it, and the bubble pays $100, do you not think folding is the best opition?

I cant see a double up being any help to him winning it so why not take the money.

i'd be over the moon picking up JJ here. ship it! limping into the money is no good.

Are you serious? Are you saying you'd fold a premium hand when you're short-stacked because someone might call with A9 where we'd be in great shape to double up? That's pretty stupid and not the strategy of someone who plays poker properly.

It isn't that bad a fold in some very specific circumstances. Bubble of a satellite, it doesnt matter if you limp into the prize with 1bb or as chip leader. it's more when you're fairly decent in chips and facing a raise from someone who covers. With AA you'll get knocked out ~20% of the time, if you fold you're nearly guaranteed a ticket.

But here OP is the tourney shortstack so he really has to double up or get out.

fire it all in to the middle - laptop and all, the whole shibang. if your panicking with JJ on the Bubble you must have played massively tight.

in that case you will induce a fold cos no-one has seen a raise from u all day.

must be a monster they will say.

I stated that this is when playing for tickets only. For example, this Sunday in the 150-WSOP on PokerStars if its bubble time and I have 5 BBs, I'll even fold AA in that spot. Before you ask, yes I think that would be +EV.

Any big-stacked SB/BB with Ax / K9 should call, no matter what table image you have build up. So the worst you can get is 30% and the best 80%, whilst folding could be calculated as a 95% certainty that you'll get the ticket (if multi-table bubble).

Note that if it were to be close to the wrong side of the button (UTG, UTG+1 or UTG+2), then yes, shove. This may sound like a reverse strategy, but its not. You're playing for a ticket and not to win.

For normal tournaments you play to win, since the final table is where the real money is at. Its not a good strategy to blind yourself into the money each time, as this will mean a lot of work for very little. The final table should be the goal and as such, you simple need more chips! JJ is an excellent hand to double up with, especially since the push can be seen as a blind steal. I'd be very happy to be called by A9s, no matter the outcome.
