Arrogance

Ok, I apologise as I know there have been some threads about this in the past but I need to get this off my chest, hopefully without incurring a ban.

I switched over to RTE last night for the 9 o'clock news, but was a few minutes early and there was a program on about Cork Harbour. I don't think 4 minutes of programming has ever made me so annoyed in my life!!!!

The arrogance and self importance of Cork people and their perceived divine right to be the 'real' capital is amazing. I have been annoyed at this for years both in generic matters and sporting matters, but last night I don't think I have ever seen it so condensed. Like most people in this country, I know plenty of Cork people, and of course there is a mix of the good the bad and the annoying like everywhere else, but common through almost all of them is the inexplicable belief of the primacy of the Corkman.

I mean, come on!!!!! Also, I am not a Dub, and have no great grá for them either. I am just an angry man I guess, but that made me nearly turn into the Angry Dad character from The Simpsons.

    Hellllooooo Cork people.

Cork isn't the capital and never will be. Get over it.
    (I'm not from Dublin either).

    Please, get a life.....
as a cork man I can honestly tell you, most of the bragging, boasting etc. is done because we know we'll get a rise out of the rest of the country and especially Dublin people.
Sure, we're proud of the place, its a great place to live, but no prouder than say Limerick people or Galway people, etc.
And all this venom because of a show about Cork harbour?? Were you in a particularly bad mood at the time or what? Should all TV programs about nice places outside the pale be banned from RTE?

Do you really think, that we think, we are or will ever be the real capital?? Maybe the problem is with the people who take all this seriously!
    C'mon the Rebels!!! ;)

Why do let stuff like that bother you OP?? I know loads of Cork people, never got any attitude or arrogance from them....I think its just the old "rebel county" thing that few Cork people seem to have...then again i could be wrong.

Lots of things bother me. I'd have more posts than Victor if I tried to explain them all one by one. This was just at the top of my list today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,126 ✭✭✭homah_7ft

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say this real capital thing except with heavy irony. I don't doubt it's out there but it must be rare. OP can you give us a few quotes or something so that we know what enraged you?

OK, cue old guy being interviewed, and add in a heavy Cork accent. He said something like this.

"If there were no people on this Island, and an alien visited, I have no doubt that he would choose Cork as the capital. As the old saying goes, What was Limerick, is Dublin, will be Cork".

This was on top of people saying comparing Cork harbour to Sydney harbour, and that Spike Island should be the most important heritage site in Europe. This was in literally 4 minutes at most, and in between talking to other people that didn't annoy me.

Exactly, its one of my favourite pastimes and as you can see by 5starpool's reaction it works very well :D

What the hell does that mean??

PS, have you ever been to Cork harbour? It's one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Would you like us to drain it so its not so big? that way RTE won't have to mention it once every 40 or 50 years.
Damn those public service broadcasters, filling the airwaves with annoying facts!

Yeah that's pretty funny alright. The Sydney harbour bit is a fair point if you paid attention in geography :p

    Great thread OP!

What is it about Cork people that think its the epicentre of the universe???

Ive a lot of friends from there aswell who I see all the time and they aint like that, I didnt see the TV program last night but I can take a pretty good guess what it was like, they think they are above every other county in Ireland god only knows why....

Heres another one to add fuel to the fire (im jokin!)

"The further west you go the tighter/scabbier people get"

(No counties in particular but you get my drift)

No offence intended to anyone out there, its a discussion!

OP: could that be a slight over-reaction on your part, do you think?

Personally I think where I'm from is better than anywhere else I've ever been, but I don't expect everyone to share that opinion. All this boll0x about arrogance - have you ever been to a GAA match, for a small club, any county in Ireland etc.? Pseudo-arrogance will be rife. It's all show. Sure, the people are proud of where they're from and are supportive of their representatives on the pitch, but for the most part the aggro and arrogance are all show.

Take the so-called arrogance of that show with a pinch of salt. Cork was the European Capital for Culture or some such recently, and so what if they're putting the harbour on the telleh! There's a tv show called Capital D that's all about Dublin, blathering on about how fantasmic and excitimicating the capital city is... why not get irate about that instead? Or do you just want to see Cork in its "rightful place" (which is complete toss, imho).

It's only TV. If it's that frustrating for you, read a book.

There's an old story about a Cork son going off to Dublin to find work. His father walks him down to Kent Station and they're chatting away. "I'll give you one bit of advice son. When, you're up there in Dublin, never ask anybody whether they are from Cork. If they are, sure they'll tell you themselves and if they're not, well you don't want to embarress them" :)

That the kind of thing that annoys you OP?
As I said, it's an old story, nothing more.

That last poster is right. There's a program about Dublin on at the moment. And there was a show about the Shannon region too. And don't get me started about that Nationwide....broadcasting stories about the rest of the country, as if they are real people! :)

OP I agree 100%! I never understood it... I've heard some cork people I know ask "Who decided on Dublin as our capital?" In saying that, I do know some Cork people who are fed up with this "Peoples Republic of Cork" mumbo jumbo...

And everyone knows anyway that Galway is the real capital.... :D

My main problem with Cork people is that they all seem to end up in Dublin whinging about how crap it is and how great Cork is.

Other than that they're usually fine. Oh, apart from Roy Keane, but let's not light that pasticular fuse.

Nah most Cork people are still in Cork. Most of that stuff is done tongue in cheek but anyone who believes it should be ridiculed from a great height.

My cousin gets the same regularly, he's going out with a girl from Cork about 4 years now and they know the girl as "your woman who goes out with yer man from Dublin!" he's a very placid guy who wouldnt say boo to anyone and for some reason he gets grief if they hear his accent.....

Only recently he got "started on" in a pub for being a dub in the "wrong place, wrong time" as he said!

Theres w*nkers everywhere, not just Dublin.....

I'm probably not as angry as the OP but I do agree with him.
I've found it in most Cork people, this arrogance and thinking they're better than everyone else.
The funny thing is ye're saying that your only doing it for a rise and your not really arrogant, but deep down it's in there somewhere.
There was a large percentage of Corkonians in my class in college in Dublin and most of them has that f**king stupid People's Republic of Cork t-shirt! Annoyed the hell out of me.

Also see it alot in sporting areas. Remember seeing da Cork-Kilkenny AI hurling final a couple of years ago and the fans being interviewed beforehand. Kilkenny fans were saying 'yeah will be a tight game, hopefully we'll win by a couple of points'. And the Cork fans 'Up ya bhoy, ya gonna win by 45 points, COME ON DA REBELS!!!.'

Pal of mine and indeed sometimes of this parish (From Cork, natch) used to refer to the Post Office in Cork as the GPO. See, i could never, and still can't figure that one out. Every country has one GPO, right - and the Irish one happens to be in Dublin...

is this common that the place Corkonians use for the purchase of stamps and the like in the City Centre is called the GPO?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭flo8s967qjh0nd

Yes, the Post Office on Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork, is referred to as the GPO. It is referred to by An Post as GPO, Cork also.

The term GPO refers to the name of the service rather than a particular building. Originally, Britain had a GPO which delivered mail all over the country and had many post offices as part of it's network. The term GPO is wrongly used to describe one particular building. Hence, both dublin people and cork people are both wrong. So, it is not impossible to have more than one "GPO" in one country although technically, GPO refers to a forerunner of An Post rather than a particular building.

Chill out, OP, we Corkonians are only having a laugh and winding up the other counties. It's like the way the Dubs wind people up by assuming that everyone outside the Pale is an amphibious creature that divides its time between caves and bogs.

Besides, there's nothing wrong with pride in where you're from. Imagine if RTE had programs about people moaning about how bad their locality was, praying for it to be nuked and attempting suicide live on air.

Its not the love of the county thing that gets me (patriotism, the belief your place of birth is the best in the world just because you were born there, we all suffer a little) to me its the complete belief that in every arguement they are right and you are wrong even when they are completely out of their depth.

I couldn't care what county they were from but I just seem to meet more people from Cork who behave like this than any other county (it is a big county though so this may account for that)

Then again one of the soundest lads in my class was from cork.

The people's repulic of cork thing is so sad. What purpose do they serve?? At least a GAA t-shirt or jersey implies a support of local sporting teams. The people's republic t-shirts might as well say, "I'm from Cork and I think its great"

The most annoying cnut i have ever met is from Cork and some of the nicest people I have met are from Cork. Its a mixed bag really. Hate those t-shirts though

They just had a bunch of crazies on that show anyway, hardly a true reflection of Cork at all. Being from Cork myself I couldnt help but laugh when they were going on about spike island being an international heritage site, and that bit when the old codger was going on about aliens. The show was fairly crap but Cork doesnt have any shows like that piece of s*** Capital D.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭flo8s967qjh0nd

Well, the t-shirts are multi-faceted really. Not only can you wear them abroad and have your picture taken next to famous landmarks wearing the t-shirt, they also serve as a one-sport fits all supporters outfit.
Soccer, hurling, football, rugby, you can wear it to all sporting events and get away with it.

Cork is a strange county alright - I've met some sound people from there but there's a far higher proportion of w@nkers. They're a strange breed, especially those who wear those People's Republic bollox t-shirts.

Up to this point in my life i thought a GPO simply referred to the main Post Office on a County level.

In my head it just meant "General Post Office" for my area so i would say that's pretty common misconception but their's nothing really wrong with as it does make logical sense ( i mean when i say the Tax Office in Cork it doesn't refer to the Tax Office in Dublin).

I'd let it go OP, It's not as if us "Corkonians" are claiming The Proclamation of Independence was declared off Oliver Plunkett St. now are we (If only :D )!
