Laptop's dying!

    hey,
    I have a dell XPS M2010.
Last evening a friend was using it when it froze up... couldn't move mouse or keyboard. I didn't think much of this at the time as it has happened before. (the keyboard and mouse are bluetooth - it can have some problems). So I shut it down then started it up again.
Almost every time it starts up now the lights come on, but after about 4seconds you hear it dying. i.e. the whir is just getting going when it gives a bit of a clunk and just quits trying. Nothing then works on the computer, can't even open the dvd drive.
I got past this only twice. Once it went on to the first stage windows screen then crashed. The other time it gave me the option to start from last working configuration, but this again crashed at the windows screen.

Anyway, it sounds to me like a pretty serious problem. Hardware issue. Just thought I'd post up here and see if anyone had any ideas before I go sending it back to dell.

Boot into the bios by tapping F2 on startup. If it stays in bios for a while it may not be hardware. Another option is to try booting of a recovery cd and see how far that goes, or even a live cd like ubuntu to see if it may just be a software problem. Make sure all peripherals are removed and if possible remove any extra memory that may have been installed.

Thanks, I doubt it will get to the bios though. I mean 99% of the time it clunks after about 3/4 seconds... way before you get the option to get into bios.
There are no peripherals attached and no extra memory.

Well got on to dell... eventually. They decided it must be the motherboard, so they tell me their going do the 'ol collect and return trick.
Next day I get a call saying there is a problem, ... eh.... we don't offer the collect and return service in Ireland any more, sorry. I say WTF?
Give out a bit and eventually get upgraded to the next day service.
Engineer comes out on friday with new motherboard and processor. After about 4 hours leaves again, my machine still fecked. He states that the new parts were dead on arrival... whatever that's supposed to mean.
So the long wait continues... they're ordering more parts now.
