Setup my PC as AP in XP...

    ASAP... :p

Ok enough acronym tomfoolery, I did it before and for the life of me I can't remember how to do it again, I want to setup my PC as an access point for a new media streaming DVD player that has wi-fi.
I have a wireless PCI card in my case, drivers installed and it is detecting other wireless networks, which is not what I want, I want the media player to detect my PC and wirelessly access the delicious goodies on its hard drive.

Do I need to install File and Printer Sharing?
Do I need to use Windows Media Connect that came with the player?
What XP services are required for file sharing wirelessly?

    Thanks in advance.

Set up an ad-hoc network on the PC.

    Thanks!
I have the Media player detecting my wireless network now (with excellent reception), but it still can't access anything on the PC.
It has a UPnP Media option or a Windows SMB option, and neither of them work,
I think the SMB option is easier (?) and I've shared a folder with some movies in it, set up the Guest account to have access to it.

I've also matched the Workgroup names on the player and the PC...

Hmm, I'm still a bit confused as to what I'm missing, I may not be running the right services still as I disabled a few of them I didn't need, now I'm not sure which ones are required for networking! :o

    *bump*
Is it definitely not possible to set up an Access Point Infrastructure mode wireless network with my PCI card?
I'm trying to save €40 or €50 by not buying a wireless router/AP!

Turns out the player won't work in Ad Hoc mode. :(

srsly just buy the AP, it will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. when I still had ISDN i used to run an ad hoc network off my main comp, and I'm glad its gone.

and you should be able to get AP's for around €30 off ebay, and some of the more obscure ones for even less. i bought a wr54g for €10 at a car boot sale last week
