hey big poker player here i dont play in tourneys much but myself and my mates play every weekend normelly 80 or so to the winner, we play winner takes all.

Anyway the weekend before last i had a TERRIBLE streak and lost 8 games in 3 days (bank holiday weekend)

So this weekend we didnt play cause 1/2 of them where at garden party and i decided to try out PokerStars and i did well in one of the tourneys and i was just wondering is that good or is online play easy, i came 1st out of 10,000, it was a play money tourney but even so i was wondering is 1st out of 10,000 good for onlne play?

    Thanks

winning any tourny is always good, but you really need to get lucky to win a 10000 runner tourny. Of course there is skill involved, but much less in tournys as opposed to the cash games which I feel are of alot higher standard than live cash.

well actually some of the hands where just crackers, i had a 93% success rate on hands, every single fold was perfect i just got a perfect feal for everything that was going to be comming out and i found it even easyier to read randomers over the internet than it is to read my friends in our home games.

bet you still hit a sick run of cards though. always easier to play when every 2nd hand hand you see queens

Well done. If there was any sort of a cash prize for the winner then use a small portion of it to play a $5 or so tournie with loads of runners, then you will find out if you can read internet monkeys well or if you really hate poker after all like the rest of us.

    Good Luck.

well i actually didnt get that many high cardds i won mostly on pairs, low straights, full houses and fluses and 1 straight flush - mostly bluffing/bullying (1/2 the hands AND IT WAS PLAY CHIPS, why are people so afraid to call anything on play money i would have 7/2 off suuit with the blinds at 100/200 i could bet 200 and win)

Play money wont give you a feel for real money play.... 1st is still good nonetheless but be careful of how you play if u ever do venture into the real money tourneys.

Most books and mags will tell u to stay away from play money, it might be ok for beginners but if your playing every weekend then u shudn be playing play money.... It'll give you bad habits and its the breeding ground of fish!!

Hey man I'm like you I suppose- won alot of fake money tournaments on Ladbrokes (Roughly 3/4 of all tournies I sat down to! maybe 12 in all) so I decided to play for cash on poker stars but its a different ball game - at best I am breaking even and maybe even losing a euro or 2 every time I play (.5c/.10c NL holdem) but I'm not too worried as I feel I am getting good training and experience. I ordered Sklansky's book on Theory of poker so hope to become a winning player in time and study.
What really gets me is some of the crazy loose play online - I usually only play pairs or AK AQ AJ or maybe limp in with A10 or K10 (I try to keep it tight to minimize losses) but often get beat by something like 6,7 offsuit or another hand that I would never play because they get lucky on the flop- maybe I should raise higher before the flop? - anyway my point being they are 2 completely different games cash vs real so beware the tilt!!!!

Its sounds like you are a lot of players out there. you have perfected the tight pre-flop starting hands and positional sense that most people like however maybe its a question of improving you're post flop play rather than making it more preflop in order to get rid of the marginal hands, for example and this is extremely crude but i wouldnt say your aces are good on a 677 board when you have been three bet and because of this overcommitence to big hands perhaps people feel they can call you with a lot wider ranges pre-flop because they feel they will be able to make better decisions after the flop than you which will negate the edge you have with your superior stating hands

Lose the k10 etc, suited connectors are better. You will just lose money with k10,q10, j10, etc

    I prefer play stacks.

well just to let you know if u play me ill play anything even 7 2 off suit, actually in the tourney i got full house 2's and 7's lucky i know but 2 others went all in thinking who would go all in on 7/2 off suit?

its worth taking the risk sometimes because u can win huge

well i always loved the line
"The Riskier The Road The Greater The Profit"

If it was a game that i had 50 or more in the game id play it right but when me and my mates play 20 Euro in each its just a laugh and a few drinks its like the play money online you don't need to play conservatively just have a good time and also keep a eye on the others and learn how they play/there tells

Lose the limping, raising is better. You will just lose money with limping.

    I prefer play stacks.

    FYP.

This is fine if you are just playing for fun and don't care about the money, personally I have more fun when I make money though.

ah ye winning money is fun but i was just up for the buzz it was my first weekend playing poker online

    Ok fair enough,

an 8 game losing streak isn't very unlikely since you're playing winner takes all against players I'm assuming you're at about the same level as.

You did well to beat 10,000 players, even at play money, although you probably got extremely lucky along the way. I've never won a 10,000 man tourney before.
its worth taking the risk sometimes because u can win huge

This is flawed thinking, it may be the most fun way of playing so if that's all you're worried about then it's fine. However, you will lose money over the long run doing/thinking like this.

I'd say you're probably a born natural. You should depositon $5000 on Mansion and go straight to the $1-$2 tables.

You just couldn't hold your tongue, could you Nicky!

OP, I'd say who ever coined your riskier road quote didn't have play money poker tourneys in mind...

Still....well done, it was a big field.
