Well folks, just looking for some info from current/former dent students about workload, size of classes, how many times did you repeat to get the course (joke!) etc etc. Honestly, I'd love somebody to tell me it's serious craic, as I know nobody doing it, and everyone seems to know the stat that it has the highest suicide rate!;)

    Cheers

and everyone seems to know the stat that it has the highest suicide rate!

Dentistry has been supplanted by actuarial mathematics in that regard.

no, really, could that actually be a good reason not to join the course?

Well I'm just finishing 1st year dental technology, so I can give you some of the basics about the DDSH.
They take in around 40 dental science students per year. The Dental School is pretty much cut off from the rest of Trinity and with only few hundred students everyone knows everyone. There is a fair bit of craic and the staff are friendly for the most part. They are very strict on attendance and neat appearance and professional conduct - it is a hospital dealing with the general public after all.
The terms are long - we are just doing our written exams this week - finish on Friday. Then Michaelmas term starts in the last week of August for 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th year students. 1st years start following Freshers' Week.
The dental course is 5 years long and post grad courses are 4 years long if you want to specialise later on.

You may be able to get the grand tour if you phone up 01-6127200 and tell them you're considering applying to do Dental Science.

Hope this is of some help. See you in the Common Room soon! :)

I just finished my 5th year of dentistry, so i can give you a little insight.

It's a tough course. They take your summers off you (you get about 6 weeks whereas the rest of trinity get like 4 months) and you have to sit exams every term of every year. There is ongoing assessment, so it's really not possible to slack off all that much.

That being said, the faculty are lovely, and you'll get to know your classmates and other hospital members really well. If you have friends elsewhere in trinity, though, you can pretty much forget about seeing them all too often.

First year is a hectic start, 40 hour lecture weeks etc. But once you get into the rest of the course, you'll realize that first year is by far the easiest year.

Anyways, I just finished the course. It was a hard slog, but I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they've got what it takes.
