just went round to the local Centra to stock up for tonights BBQ and bought some charcoal as well.

first off ...I was delighted to get actual charcoal and not those pressed briquettes.
but then, on closer inspection, on the packet it says "finest Namibian hardwood charcoal"

    WTF??

Irish charcoal not good enough? Or at least European charcoal?

Is Namibian charcoal the latest and greatest in "Deckland" now" ...the must have of charcoals?

And also ...last time I checked ...Namibia is largely desert (The Namib desert) ...do they even have wood to make charcoal?
Am I depriving some poor Namibian woman of her cooking fuel by using "her" wood as charcoal?

Or do they use the cutoffs from illegal Congelese rain forest clearings, ship them half way across Africa to Namibia, where a cottage industry has grown, making charcoal ...which is then airfreighted into Ireland ??

This globalisation thingy shure has gone too far ...

*And before any of the PC brigade comes on here and starts kicking up a fuss, no, the above wasn't meant to be racist or anything, it was purely meant as a very, very tongue-in-cheek joke!

You might be surprised to know that Namibia goes in quite a bit into South central Africa as the Caprivi strip which touches Zambia and Zimbabwe at Victoria Falls.

Quite a bit of hardwood in that area such as teak and other well known hardwoods.

If thats the case, then there are surely better uses for teak than making charcoal?

Did you read the link ? its made from "invader bush"

Namibia is endowed with invader bush or bush encroachment in abundance. Studies have found that 26000million hectares of land are overrun by this bush which is a problem because it has tremendously reduced the carrying capacity of the land.

Although this is the case, invader bush can be used to not only generate electricity, make bush blocks and charcoal, but it can also be used to manufacture furniture and toys, among many other products.
