The US phones are going to be locked on at&t, its no use.JUst dont make a quick decision wait around one month after the launch date for the price to stable as its going to be really hyped up big time like the nokia n95

Why in God's name would you bother? You need a 2 year contract with Cingular to get one in the States. I was talking to a guy who works for Apple here in Cork yesterday, and it'll be out in a short few months here. Just be patient, and get the model that's completely compatible with the European networks. I'll be getting one too!

yes, but i giarentee locking is the last thing they considered so its propably easy to change ( /system/libary/provider.plist) or something like that and also i want it to play around with until the european one comes out and then sell this one back to the US over ebay, also there have been roumers of pay as you go iphone

    iPhone Needed
Try, "I'd like to get an iPhone, can anyone help me please" you sound like a five year old spoilt brat in a toy shop. AT&T will have it securely locked, so it won't be easy to unlock.

As for it coming out on Pay As You Go, I very much doubt it, I'd be like selling an 8800 or xda on pre-pay, too expensive, it'll also still be locked.

There's a reasonable chance that the EU models will be 3G too - I mean the US one's aren't because the format just isn't popular there yet, but in the EU any new phone (especially a high-spec one) has it as standard at this stage.

Worth waiting the month or so to a) possibly get a better phone, b) get to know if it's actually any use and c) get a network that supports it fully (along with all its fancy features).

If it has to be bought on a contract.. Surely youd need to have a us addy, passport, proof of address etc to sign up for the contract. Also, whats a two year contract gonna cost???

You'll actually find that locking was one of the first thing that was considered.

naw, most us phones can be bought without a contract, just locked to the network you buy it off.

Check out the usual retailers such as compusa or bestbuy

U can only get the phone on AT&T with a 2 year contract... Tis the only way to get one at the mo

According to MacBreak weekly , it will cost you

$999 , without a contract. Seriously, do you want to pay that for a ipod/phone?

Wait until the europe release, I guarantee you it will be a better phone than what they are gonna sell on the 29th.

I see in todays paper that AT&T are rumoured to be making a bid for Vodafone. I presume then the iPhone will be under vodafone here

****ing hell? In pink? With all the crappy vodafone software and "extensions"?

I hope for o2. In my opinion the best provider.

Working in a store that pretty much will be selling it when it is launched over here, its amazing the number of people coming in at this stage wanting to buy it. Can't wait until it comes out over here, I'd seriously be tempted to borrow as much as I can from the bank, buy as many as possible and sell them off at a stupidly high price. Phone touting if you will. Seriously though OP hang on until the squired edition comes out over here.

Bull****, we wont see it here until between Sepetmber and February next year and we will be robbed for them as usual.
They will try to roll it out before christmas but wont be able to cope with demand. Exactly the same as when they rolled out the MBP C2D's and it took them months to catch up. Took me 2 months to get mine and i ordered within 20 mins of the online update.

Who owns Vodafone won't make any odds - firstly the bid is just a rumour at the moment, and no takeover would have happened by the time the iPhone hits the European market... secondly the contract with AT&T is for the USA only, and won't be automatically rolled out to any other markets it's operating in - Apple will negotiate a completely seperate one for other markets.

If AT&T were the owners of Vodafone it might give them a tiny edge over o2 etc., but Apple will take the best offer no matter who it's coming from.

    Few things:
    - Apple have servers on Cingular's network. How tightly these are tied into the phone is unknown at the mo
    - The phone is EDGE, not even 3G or HSDPA
    - pay as you go apple phones - not this side of 2009 IMHO

I'd wait until early July to see how the victims^h early adopters fair

If you seriously want one after that, I could see if they are really available unlocked when I'm in NYC in late July...

My gut feel is that telefonica (O2) or vodafone will end up doing the iPhone in Europe... more leaning towards Vodafone at the mo

One thing to note, although I'm not sure if this is really noteworthy: most US phones do not have sim cards. In fact, most Americans I've met don't know what a sim card is. So by means of extrapolation - the iPhone probably won't have one (my own personal opinion). Therefore, no matter if you get an iPhone, and unlock it - you can't get a simcard in there I reckon.

I'm in the US by the way, I'll get you one for 4,000$ if you like?! Payment up front naturally! /jk

Phones on the cdma networks in the states don't use sim cards. i.e. sprint and verizon. Phones on GSM networks such as t-mobile and AT&T do use sim cards. The reason they don't know what sim cards are is because they're idiots :)

I'm open to correction on any of the above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

If I do get one it will be Sim Free . There's no way I'd pay that much for it to be locked to any single network. Also I hate the way Vodafone bastardize phones. Look what they did to SE K750i or the V800i, disgraceful IMO.

I agree about waiting though, something that intricate is going to have teething problems. For example wait for the complaints about the screen getting scratched too easily etc. You'll need a pair of white gloves on to use it !!!

That aside I WANT ONE TOO !!!

ok first off, there is not a definite that it will require a 2 year contract, as this has been removed from the ads. apparently any AT&T customer can upgrade to it for the handset price (which is still not definite).

there are rumours of pay as you go phones from launch.

It does have a sim card and it is removable as Steve jobs said at the announcment at Macworld.

i really want one and my sis is over there at the moment - very tempted to send her cash, but the smart thing to do is wait... sigh :(

i'd love to have been over for the launch - to queue up and al that - would have been god fun.

also there will be 3million available at launch so i have a feeling there may some available without a contract, rumour has it AT&T aren't subsidising these as much as their other phones at Apples request.

Well I can tell you there is now way I am either changing phone companies or signing up to a contract for the iPhone. I would imagine I am not alone in this about 76% of the Irish phone market is prepay. I have never known anyone who has had a billpay mobile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

And by comparisson, nearly everyone I know has a billpay phone.

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/06/12/iphone_in_europe_youtube_on_iphone_zfs_not_happening.html
Speaking to the Italian press on Monday, Apple's Europe boss stated that iPhone will be available only alongside a cellular contract when it arrives overseas later this year. Meanwhile, it looks like there's sorry news on the 'Flash on iPhone' and 'ZFS on Mac OS X' fronts.

Apple Europe frontman Pascal Cagni won't say precisely when and with which provider Apple plans to launch its iPhone in Europe, but when it does arrive it won't be offered with pre-paid plans that are popular in parts of the region.

Cagni told the Italian-language seeteB.IT that the Apple handset is slated for availability "at the end" of 2007 and will only be sold with a service contract.

Google translation: "On the carrier we do not have still news to supply to you but I can say that for Italy there will be problems with the iPhone, you that you are a lot it accustoms to you to pre-paid."

    iPhone to support YouTube

Meanwhile, there's sure to be some dashed hopes if iPhone arrives later this month without support for Adobe's Flash media format. Right now, Flash is looking more like a "maybe" than a guarantee.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs told the New York Times that "you might see" Flash support come to iPhone, but YouTube support would be present regardless.

"Yeah, YouTube -- of course," he said. "But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec."

Jobs also confirmed that iPhone won't support Java. "[It's] not worth building in," he said. "Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain."

actually it is a big complaint in the states that it wont have 3g, afaik steve jobs has said somewhere that it wont have 3G as it has WIFI.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/14/apple-unable-to-find-iphone-partner-in-europe/
A Vnunet.com article claims that European mobile operators are unwilling to concede to Apple's iPhone partnership demands.

"Operators consistently told us, not for attribution, of course, that they had spoken to Apple and found the company 'unbelievably arrogant', making demands that 'simply cannot be justified no matter how hot the product is'," Avi Greengart, a principal analyst at Current Analysis, wrote in an advisory on Monday.

Several operators went as far as to say they "will never offer the iPhone." It's been widely publicized that Apple has made several unconventional demands of their cell phone carriers. In the U.S., Verizon is reported to have rejected Apple's deal due to the terms of the agreement. Apple's terms with AT&T are rumored to include revenue sharing of the monthly subscriber fees for the iPhone.

The other option is for Apple to sell the iPhone directly to consumers without a Sim card, allowing users to later install one from their mobile provider. This, however, would require Apple to somehow bypass the provider's voicemail to enable their "Visual Voicemail" feature which requires server-side support.

To be honest if th eonly feature we lost is Visual voicemail, does anyone give a crap - it's hardly a killer feature of the phone...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 438 ✭✭StephenC_IRL

yeah couldnt give a crap about voicemail, but the lack of instalable app's (AJAX can only go so far), the fact that it will have to be activated by iTunes, and the eventual bast*rdisation thats going to happen to the phone no matter what network it ends up on over heremeans that I shall forgoe the iPhone at this time
