Hotmail/Bebo not accessible on small network

    I have a peculiar problem.

    My setup is as follows,

    Laptop/Wireless>>>>>>Main Rig/LanCable>>>>>DSLModem

So I setup the network as above, with the main rig sharing internet wirelessly around the house.

My laptop connects no problem and I can load most webpages (including this one). However it won't load up bebo or hotmail and a few other random sites. My main rig can access no problem.

A ping test from my laptop to 'www.hotmail.com' works fine and it resolves the IP (DNS working ok then ya?)

It just won't load the page on IE. Just stays loading and no cigar. Same with bebo and msn. A little confused I am. I had a look in the hosts file and no entries are made.

Running WinXp Pro 32 bit. Ideas?

    I did try with firefox.
I deleted temp files, cookies etc...
I used the ip address also in the explorer bar. No joy.
Did a 'netstat' command while page was trying to load bebo. Said connection was established. Baaah

Hrmm, tough to isolate what could be doing that.
My main rig can access no problem
I assume that's on the same network, right?

That sounds pretty mad to me. Is this definitely an error that you can reliably reconstruct?

This may be bad advice, and I'd be happy for a more knowledgeable boardsie to overrule me, but I'd start it all over again by reinstalling windows on the laptop if all else fails.

Back up your stuff first though. I assume you don't need to be told that....

Yes same network. I have another laptop that I will test out wirelessly.

ROBINS> Would you beleive I have that app already to tweak a DC project called www.netdimes.org . But I have tried it now with diff MTU's. No Cigar. I'll come back with an answer on the second wireless laptop.

OK! Connected up another laptop the same way. No problems with Bebo/Hotmail etc.

So my focus is now on the offending laptop.

EDIT: WTF!!!! The offending laptop now is loading up bebo/hotmail no problem now!!!!!:confused: Now this is confusion.!

EDIT2: the only thing that happened was that the other laprop used act as the shared connection wirelessly. So you can imagine that when I powered it on for the first time in ages, there was a IP conflict. Quickly changed it to Autonatically assign IP... Maybe this had something to do with the overall result.

Still confused.. but its all working now.

Any firewall installed or any that used to be installed.

Try this and tell me what happens:

    Start -> Run -> telnet bebo.com 80 -> OK
Then type: GET / HTTP/1.0 and press enter twice (what you type prob won't show up).

If it's an internet explorer related problem it should spew out a load of HTML code

Ya the problem is back again.

Done that Telnet thing last night. ya I got HTML code... most of the time (but not all)

Bare in mind, i can access bebo/hotmail when the laptop is connected through work or on the Vodafone 3G card.

Also I have Zone Alarm installed on the main machine (which is what the laptops connect to).

EDIT: This is clearwire BTW. Perhaps they don't allow 443 port connection to a machine on the LAN (as opposed to the one on the WAN)? It really has me confused this one. When i close Zone Alarm the problem still persists.

EDIT: Is there any way i can see a log or otherwise trhat tells me exactly whats happening when I try hotmail or bebo. BTW boards.ie does not work either. :(

EDIT3: I might also add that DHCP doess not work either now. I have to manually assign IP to 2 laptops.

Try resetting the router back to default settings?

If you get HTML code it's definitely connecting, I find it unusual now that it doesn't work in either browser.

I mentioned ZoneAlarm as I had trouble before that after I uninstalled it it bolloxed me connection and also found that despite being uninstalled there were packets being sent to IP addresses registered to Zone Labs.

You can use this free packet sniffer to capture the raw data: http://analyzer.polito.it/ , you need to download Winpcap also (it's like a replacement for windows internet sockets). Go to start new capture, select your device from the list somewhere and just go ok and it will start capturing, it can be a bit buggy (don't try a CTRL+A to select all packets and start a new capture instead of trying to delete all the old packets). If you're using a wireless card to capture the data you might have to disable promiscuous mode (which captures all data going over the network as opposed to that just directed for you) as many wireless cards don't support it.

But that's off the point. Sorry let me know what you find out...

Thanks man! It be interesting to see what ports are open when I tries the hotmail/bebo/boards site. I'm starting to htink port 443 might be a problem. I'll report back. :)

EDIT: No router is in use here... its a clearwire Modem. I wonder would telnet let me log into da modem.? Anyways.
