Road Trip USA

My friend and I are planning a 3 week road trip to USA at the end of August. After a military style coup I have managed to procure a full driver's licence and an international driving permit, so renting a car shouldn't be an issue. We are thinking of flying into New York and spending a few days there in a mate's house and then renting a car and heading off for a couple of weeks. From looking at the map I thing that driving as far as Chicago would be very possible, maybe stopping off in a few cities on the way. We don't plan renting accommodation and will probably stay in cheap motels or wherever we can find, maybe even sleeping in the car if needs be. Anyone got any ideas of the places we should go to etc? I'm kind of concerned that we'll just spend most of the time driving around the place lost and looking for places to sleep. I'd really like to see the sights and really get the feeling of travelling on the open road as well as meeting people and just having a good time for as little money as is possible. Any ideas from experienced "road trippers" would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I don't think you need an international drivers permit for the US ( you didn't last time I hired a car there in 2005 anyway ).

You don't say how old you are , most hire companies won't hire to under 25's or charge a whopping premium.

That said, I would loosely plan an route, remember that American maps are hopeless ( or all the ones I have found anyway ) , but buy as good a one as you can find anyway the ones from the hire company are only good to eat your chips out of.

There are loads of cheap motel chains , most are near shops/bars etc .

DON'T WHATEVER YOU DO DRINK AND DRIVE !!

Have a great holiday , the US is great fun !

    !

Its usually about $25 - $30 in most states , in NY it can go up to $50. So if you are renting for 3 weeks and start in NY it would be well worth your while bussing it out of the state to save money.
