I suspect a wheel bearing is gone in my car, keening noise comes from car when driving after a while at speed or up hills. Two questions:

    A. Is this dangerous and should I get it fixed ASAP
    B. Is it expensive to fix?

I think the rear left wheel bearing is gone in my car too and would also like to know if anybody knows how much it would be to get fixed. Thanks.

I got a bearing in a focus done for €80 plus the cost of the part. I bought the part myself directly from a ford garage and then got a price from a local small garage to fit it. It's not a big job. I don't know how dangerous it is on a car but I left a bearing on a boat trailer when I knew it needed replacement and the wheel came off when towing the trailer one day:eek: I would imagine it might be the same in a car

It's not all that dangerous unless it's left for a long time. Usually the noise is only a slight bit of vibration magnified by the weight of the car on it, so it'll get much worse as you corner and the bearing is on the outside taking all the weight, and it'll be much quieter when it's on the inside of a corner. It's not a big job at all to do, €80 + part seems reasonable, should only take an hour or two. If you had the tools and trusted yourself you could even do it at home... Bearings are around €20-30 from a dealer IIRC...

Edit: As for the wheel coming off the trailer, that's gotta be fairly serious indeed! The construction of a bearing on a car is such that even if it disintegrated completely, it would still retain the wheel on the axle, just make a god awful racket and maybe seize. Don't think it'd come off like the trailer!

I've recently replaced a wheel bearing and a "Bush..something or other" (cant remember)

Drove about 6000 miles with the noise which in retrospect seems crazy! :D
The cars performance didnt degrade at all, it was just the noise.

Apparently the rear bearings are cheaper to repair than the front?
I was charged €300 for replacing the front
