the Audi A4 is a sweet car .. but go for the BM ..just cos its more of a p***y magnet than the A4 :D

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

What year? BMW finally made it to the hard top CC this year. Only 10 years after MB did it first with the SLK  And Audi isn't even there yet...

And I had a good look up close with a 335i convertible a couple of months ago and I wasn't that impressed. The lines seemed somewhat wrong because of the CC mechanism

Style wish I'd go for the Audi, but the roof will look so outdated soon. And that means massive depreciation as it doesn't appeal as much to the next poseur one step lower down on the budget ladder :D

This same question kept me awake for hours last year.
Is it the 1.8T vs the 320 you can't decide on too?
Firstly both are streets ahead of the competition - Saab 93 and Volvo C70.(imo)
CLK maybe not but more reasonably priced.

BMW pros - much more of a drivers car I found - rear drive setup, better weighted steering ,more brake feel.
Pros for the Audi are it is less compromised as a car, proper 4 seats plus a more useable boot, although wind and road noise is higher than the beemer.

Thing about a convertible is - you hear the engine quite a bit and believe me if you take the 1.8 4 pot audi out into the country on a topless day you'll really miss the beemer (plus in town at lights etc), and the 2.4 V6 is a wheeze yolk that doesnt deliver the power the capacity suggests.

Last piece of advice foe you imaBMman is to go buy the wind deflector asap if you dont have one - it makes a hugh difference and allows you top down 50% more of the time.

I may have a soft copy of a road test from Autocar, pm me if you'd like a copy, will see if I can find it.

I read an article recently saying how it had been a power struggle between the engineers who did not want to build a tip top because its a silly idea (very mush compromises weight and its distribution) and the sales folk who like you said they appeared to be fallling behind.
Oh and the SLK is a 2 seater (much easier to do)

I think I would take a long look at the new Volvo tin top though ! It looks terrific and seems to be decent value !

No experience of it though !

Other than that its a tough decision, surely the BMW is much more expensive new..................and possibly cheaper used !

Are you buying new or used ??

If the audi is fwd then I would say to go for it even if it is not as good as the bmw because the bmw 320 is lethal in the wet with rwd cos there is no weight in the back. Mine spun out of control a few times and I had to put a bag of sand in the boot.

If he brave enought to get a convertible why not get the new shape mx5 probably get a brand new one for the same price as a used audi or bmw, drives brilliantly aswell. Do I think this chap is after image more than anything else.

    mazda-mx5.jpg

Pug 407 coupe think this has an electric folding roof aswell.

Really ? What year was it ? I cannot get mine do do anything like that - even with DSC off !

firstly - me thinks you are thinking about the 307CC
secondly yes MX5 is better hands down but these cars are not in the same class at all - the BMW and Audi seat 4 and are way bigger.

I had an A4 convertible as a rental on holidays a few years ago. It was a 1.8T and was very nice. Felt really solid on the road at speed, didn't really suffer from that wobble like most drop tops do with the roof down. The 1.8 turbo was nippy enough too but suffered a little turbo lag and was a little thirsty.

Don't have any experience of the 3 Series convertible though.
