    I'm travelling to the States at the end of the month. My passport expires in October. I'm just wondering if it would be prudent to get a new one before I go assuming of course I am allowed get a new one before it actually expires. I thought there were issues with the States and passports nearing expiration.

    as far as i`m aware traveling to the US they will not accept passports less than 6 months from the expiry date

    You'll need it to be valid 6 months from the date of travel i think, check with the US embassy

    EDIT: What he said above

    U.S. and Ireland have an agreement that automatically extends a passports validity for six months on admission so you'll be fine

    Not 100% sure about that particular statement - care to point the OP to a link that states that?

    One thing you do require is a machine readable passport - so if your old passport doesn't meet this criteria then a new one is necessary...

    It's machine readable allright. Used it last year without a problem. I think I'll get a new one just to be on the safe side. Will need it anyway. Thanks.

    Best to get a new one Muso I'd say. You are allowed to get a new one iif your old one is within 6 months of expiration or if you are going on a long trip before that I think.

    Considering how lax the US can be on peoples rights and how fickle immigration can be, you're better off getting a new one. And sure, you'll have to get one sooner or later. It's better to be safe than sorry.

    I'm in the same boat and unfortunately there is less than ten working days left until my departure. What is the process on going to the passport office in Dublin. Will i be waiting all day or can I get a ticket and return to work and head back at a later time?

    musician;

    if you can bring proof of flights the passport office in molesworth street will get you one in 5 working days.

    you have to physically go into their offices though and queue for a bit. but collecting it is a doddle-there is hardly any queue.

    I'm leaving in a week. With 4 months left on my passport I expect to be ok but I'll let you know if my holiday is ruined.
