Connecting rebel xti (400d) to mac

    Hey guys,

I'm in some new office and brought my camera in with me today and was gonna work some of the pics on it, but the only thing is, I don't erally know how to use a mac! I had to start from the basics yesterday going through all the menu's in photoshop whenever I wanted to do something, but eventually started learning off the new keyboard shortcuts.

But this morning I connected my camera to the G5 and I haven't a clue why I can't find it, I'm thinking maybe it's formatted for a pc (which I wouldn't be too suprised if this was the problem) considering when I went into the hardware overview it doesn't show up.

but what throws this theory off is the fact that when I connect the camera and turn it on, it says busy on the camera screen and the cf light flashes as it always does when I connect to the pc!

Can somebody shine some light on this problem for me? I'm prolly gonna be sitting here all day doing nothing if I don't find a solution.

    Cheers for any help! :D

    Wes

You're better off getting a card reader for 20 quid in Peats etc, then it'll show up as a drive on your desktop.

Afaik, you'll need Canon software to retrieve from the camera.

Oh, and good luck getting used to PS on a Mac!

Yeh, was planning on trying to find one lying around, but no luck! I might just hang on until I get home and grab one from there, haven't really got much money at the minute! Just back from holidays!

I was hoping I'd be able to do something similar to what I do on pc's, there's some slow ass program you can use if you haven't installed the drivers on it..

    Cheers Faj!

now I may be wrong (because I havent connected either of my cameras to my mac yet) but wont the camera just show up as a drive if you plug it in via usb?

PS on a mac kicks ass :p

Nope, not for me. I tried it on one of the new iMac's and a G4 and it wouldn't come up, camera had full battery. Actually, I tried both the 300D and 5D in the iMac

You have an application on your Mac called Image Capture which came with the OS. Start that up and your camera will be recognised straight off. Connect camera with usb, open app, turn on camera. Job done.

so to summarise, get a card reader :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Card reader is always going to be faster, obviously... but.. to answer the OP, Image Capture is what you are looking for. ;) Driver-free. No installation required, Canon or otherwise as previously suggested. Not as fast as a card reader but it will do the job you want, reliably.

Running out to the shop and getting a card reader might not be an option for the OP. And from the post it seems he/she would like the get the data from their camera today - hence Image Capture suggestion.

Humour taken, but like I said... I'm simply pointing out the immediate available solution to the OP. Costs nothing, and requires nothing to be installed.

Why are you looking for one for yourself Al?

Amazing how quickly things go off topic here.

No no, I'm quite content with mine.

I think the question was answered by your post. I don't see why we can't incorporate humour into the forum though.

Actually, the majority of threads do stay on topic. Same as in every forum

I blagged myself an iBook from one of the users in our place here who said she didn't want it(!). When I connected my 400d it was automatically picked up by the iPhoto SW and allowed me to import stuff from the cam completely hassle free.

I don't deal in options, I deal in solutions damnit. Connecting up your camera every time you want to pull a few photos from a CF card is moronic. A card reader (take your chioce of USB or Firewire) is the best solution.

...and one could pick a reader up in Lidl while looking into the aforementioned degree.

I use a card reader and I agree that it is the *fastest* solution, but I merely pointed out that it MIGHT not be the immediate solution, which it seemed the OP was asking for, which I answered with.

So everytime I post a reply to answer someone's question am I going to get this kind of response for my effort? I really fail to see how me posting an answer to a question warrants the response that has been given.

OP, sorry that this thread has gone off topic. As stated, the fast long term solution is a card reader, the immediate no-work required solution is Image Capture, I hope that helps.

Hahahaha!! I tell ya, if I didn't already have a heap of PC software to be using I'd be using a Mac for photo work. Not familiar with the Canon settings for connectivity, but all the Nikons have the option to act as a Mass Storage device or a camera. Set to camera and you need software to get the pics, be it Canon's or Apple's, but set it to mass storage and it shows up on the desktop like any other drive...

Always preferred that way of working over the "My Computer" and drive letters system, but that's just me :)

Cheers for all the help lads! Sorry for the late reply, I sent one already, but it doesn't seem to have appeared.. :S

Anyway, I ended up getting piled with work and not getting round to it until yesterday, when I used the image capture, very handy little tool! Faster than the generic one on pc's imo!

I'm gonna try get my hands on a card reader as you can use the one of them for loads of different cards, aswell as the speed advantage!

Thanks again for all the help, didn't mean to cause a small dispute, hope it's not long term!

everything is a small dispute here.. the place would be boring without it :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Glad Image Capture worked for you Wez. And dont worry about the dispute, certainly nothing to do with you or your post... Posts from me in general dont go down so well on this forum, hence I only post when I have something helpful to say. And the dispute is no biggie anyway.

one more outburst like that and I'll cut off one of your fingers... Sometimes banning people just isn't enough of a deterrant.
