Is this a Sharp LCD HDTV ?

Most come with a VGA or DVI input to which you can use the second output on your graphics card this makes connecting them a lot easier and gives far higher picture quality. If you have VGA or DVI on the TV don't waste time with s-video input (what you call catv).

With either the VGA/DVI or s-video connected you need to go into the ATI control panel display section and enable multi-display mode. When you first start the control panel it will ask for basic or advanced mode, go with advanced then straight into the display manager section and it should have detected both displays.

Make sure your drivers are up to date as well, I assume you have XP so download the Catalyst driver from this link.

    thanks for reply.

i am going to go with dvi-dvi as soon as i get the cable

my vga connector on the laptop is pins and my cable had pins on both ends too so thats why i couldnt use it

Are you sure catv and svideo are the same??? coz i have a seperate socket with a box with an s in it as a symbol and i thought that was the s-video

I'm not exactly sure what you define CATV is because to be honest I though it stood for cable TV

The laptop probably has a multi-purpose video out that looks like s-video but has more pins on it then a normal one. This is because the connection has been wired to output composite video or sometimes audio as well though a special adapter that may or may not have come with the laptop.

You can buy adapters/cables that will turn the 7 pin s-video port into a regular 4 pin type compatible with standard s-video cables.

But if your laptop has a DVI or VGA output then you are better off using that instead.

For audio check to see if the laptop has an 3.5mm audio output as if you want to pipe audio out to the TV speakers you will need to link them.
