What went wrong?

Had an interview a few weeks ago. Went really well, got on extremley well with the boss and he basically came out and said the job was practically mine but he had to interview a few more people that day but that not to worry I'd be perfect for the job and he'd ring me early the next week...so no phonecall came that week or the week after so I guessed that he must have given the job to someone else that came in that day, which I thought was fair enough but last week I saw that the job was advertised again, this would be 2 weeks after my interview....so is this a common thing? Never usually get my hopes up but really thought that I had this one in the bag. The only thing I can think of is that maybe my references didn't work out but I don't see why they wouldn't have.

    Did you contact them?

No...should I have phoned back? He said he'd call me...

Yes. If he said he'd call you the next day and didn't for over 2 weeks, you definitey should, even if just to get feedback. If it was a job I really wanted, I would have called back a couple of days later.

Ok thanks...it's been a good few weeks now though, should probably let it go...maybe I don't want to hear the feedback anyway if I didn't get it!! :D

Ah no not to worry, just bugged me a bit that he was so over the top about the job being mine. That's all.

Why wouldn't you call him like?

Or maybe you should hear where you potentially went wrong and correct it for next time.

    Yes man call them

    You have nothing to loose

I had my interview and i have been given same kind of hopes but if i am not recieving responce i will definately call back.

Make them aware that they promised something and then backtracked !

I see no reason why you should not call them At the very least they owe you some feedback as to why you did not suit. There could be a myriad of reasons and it would be better for you to, as was said earlier, find out why to help you improve your chances next time.

    A theory:

They wanted some who was interested in the job, and you seemed so.

2 weeks later, you never rang, so you don't seem interested. They re-advertise.

Maybe you were the best candidate they had seen.
So they wanted you to think you had it so you wouldn't look for other jobs and arrange to be able to start for them.
But they also wanted to interview other people.
    Keep their options open.

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of years back, interview with the MD and he said the job was mine. He told me he'd confirm in writing within the next couple of days, I thought great stuff. Never heard another peep out of them.

He would not take any of my calls (I was most polite but felt some kind of explanation was courtesy at least) and after about a week of leaving messages every other day I gave up and figured the job must have gone to someone else. My references were never checked.

About a month later the job reappeared in the newspaper. I applied again and got a PFO without interview lol. I never did find out what the problem was. But I have the company's name on my hitlist if I ever cross them in my career again.

    LOL!

Well I took your advice and called back yesterday and today and left messages, nothing back yet.....like I said I don't feel I got my hopes up for no reason, have had many interviews and was never told a job was practically mine until this one. Just a bit disheartening but sure I'll know better next time.

Some people can't give bad news, or tell it like it is. But would rather sugar coat everything and then ignore you. Sad but true.

That was downright disgusting and I admire your lack of annoyance. Fair play to you. Good attitude.

I can understand why the OP didn't rang, considering the company said that THEY'D ring. If I'm reassured that I'll be getting a call, I won't call them - it might annoy them, considering their reassurance. After two weeks, fair enough, maybe the OP should have phoned. But it shouldn't be the reason for the OP not to receive any correspondence after being practically promised the job.

That is really, really disgusting. I'm getting so sick of recruitment practices in this country. Seriously considering moving abroad.

Any word yet, OP? I presume not...

I think some of you are too thin skinned. If someplace is interested they'll get back to you, if not they won't. Simple as that. If nowhere ever calls you back you need to change something in your applications.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Oh come on! I'm surprised at how THICK-skinned the OP and ellscurr are! Being pretty much told they've got the job and reassured that they would be contacted, hearing zilch, and then - the cherry on top - the job is readvertised! It's mind-blowing.

That doesn't even apply here. The interviewers made it clear that they WERE interested. Not only was it extremely unfair, but it was also very unprofessional, and would surely warrant disciplining.

I would have thought nobody'd stoop that low, but I'd believe it now.

Maybe they just misplaced your CV and didn't know how to contact you anymore?

Now, I do think that is a slightly optimistic outlook I have :P

The interviewer (the Boss) didn't say he had it. But he practically had it. Unless you get it in writing then you can be sure you've got it. This is pretty common in my experience. Who is going to discipline the boss?

I wouldn't be pissed off at not getting the job - no company owes anyone a job. It's the treatment that gets to me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,288 ✭✭✭pow wow

lol my mum still goes on about how unjust it was. I was pretty annoyed at the time, and for me it was the treatment rather than not getting the job. The MD told me the job was mine, full of beans so he was, and then nothing. There was no need for him to get my hopes up if they were interviewing other people etc. Even if he changed his mind later as apparently he did a phonecall would have been courtesy.

I had just moved back from England at the time, and then as now the recruitment process here baffles me. Makes for interesting dinner conversation I suppose lol.

No offense but maybe it would do you good to move abroad ... might calm you down a little. Try London/Sydney/New York and check out how their recruitment procedures work ... I have worked in them all ... business is business and isn't always straight forward.
