Could anybody please tell me if there is a noxious fumes and poisoning from a blocked chimney that has been used for solid fuel - Coal and timber? It's mostly gas and carbon monoxide we're warned about.

The chimney could only have been used when it wasn't blocked so any fumes would have got out.

Anytime you have combustion, you run the risk of monoxide poisoning.

Well this chimney is unused, so I suppose there's no harm in blocking it at the top. It'll be blocked at the bottom too, but only with insulation so heat doesn't go up.

Your not suppose to block an unused chimney:( ,You'll get dampness building up . Best to leave a little vent and let some circulation through.

Sorry for my previous reply ,I read your post wrong. The stuff thats in a chimney is harmless really ,unless like me ,you enhale some when your cleaning it.
I don't clean chimnies as a profession ,but I have to ,if it hasn't been done before I install a gas fire.

Alright. Thanks. But can I block it at the bottom with some insulation (wool let's say) to keep the room's heat from escaping?
