Ok, we get it, your friends are gone, thank you for that, well done

Now, have you actually anything related to classic cars to talk about, or are you just here to raise the noise level a bit more using the same regurgitated subject that has driven this forum into resembling the rambling texts of an eleven year old?

I logged into to see if people we're talking about Classic Cars, but no, you have managed to now create two threads asking where your friends are, perhaps you should use more traditional methods of communication to enquire as to their health?

Right so, I have a classic American car, do I qualify to be a "Yankee Dude", or maybe even "budys", I'd say I do, so lets hear it, what fantastic thing would you like to talk to me about in the subject of Classic American Automobiles.....

Such hostility in your post!! mustang68... Not sure i like that? Maybe im just misunderstanding you.. it can be so easy to mis-read the way something is written sometime... Anyway
Yes I did start a second thread but I was given permission to do so as the first one was locked... And I don't see a problem in asking them to post up DO YOU!!!

But seen as you would like to engage in conversation Iv just rebuilt a chevy big block This is the work iv done so far. What do you think? Do you think Im going in the right direction to try and get 400 BHP!!

    S. S Manley Valves: 1973 “049” open chamber heads (similar to the 1971 LS6 454-425HP combustion chamber) W / Manley Severe Duty 2.19” intake and 1.88” exhaust valves. Both are Swirl polished stainless and are Manley’s best valves. The exhaust valve seats have been replaced with hardened seats and the exhaust valve guides have been replaced with bronze guides to provide long life and wear resistance with unleaded fuels.

Valve Springs: Single coil w/damper winding.

Rocker Arms: Crane “Strong Arm” aluminium roller rockers, fully rollerized fulcrum and tip.

    Retainers: Crane hardened steel retainers.

    Keepers: Crane machined keepers.

Lifters: Rhoades Variable duration lifters (Boost low end torque up to 25%)

Valve seals: Premium Felpro Viton Valve Seals – entire engine was assembled using Felpro gaskets; Perma-Torque Blue gaskets were used for head and intake manifold gaskets.

Crankshaft: Stock with polished journals – ground .010 undersize on both main and connecting rod bearings. The entire reciprocating assembly was balanced.

Rods: Stock Chevrolet 3/8” bolt connecting rods.

Rod bolts: ARP High tensile rod bolts.

Pistons: TRW # L2399 .030” oversize forged pistons w/.110” Dome.

Rings: Speed Pro Plasma Moly Rings

Bearings (Rod, Main, Cam): All bearings are Clevite 77/ Michigan 77 Tri-metal bearings.

Camshaft: Crower Cams “Hot Street Beast” Camshaft, .519” Lift, 223 degree duration @ .050 lift on intake lobe, and .529” Lift, 228 degree @ .050 lift on exhaust lobe.

Intake manifold: Edelbrock C396 Intake. Older intake from late 60’s early 70’s – great intake, no longer made, comparable to Performer manifold of today but better because it has full size ports and Performer does not.

Carburation: Holley throttle body injection – carb body size 900 CFM airflow, can be adjusted manually. But i was thinking of changing it for a more conventional one like maybe a 750cfm.... What do you think?

Exhaust: Flow master force 2, 2.5” pipe. or would you stick with the stock one?

Ignition: Stock GM HEI w/ modified advance curve (20 degrees at the crank @ 2800 RPM) and ACCEL Super coil. AC plugs gapped @ .035” 12 deg. TDC advance (36 degrees total at crank @ 2800 RPM).

Transmission: Borg Warner Super T-10, 4 speed w/ 2.64:1 first gear ratio. I think this gearing will work very well. What do you think?

Rear end: Posi-traction with stock 3.42 ratio.

If this is a little over your head I Must introduce myself to you at a show some time.. Blue Mustang isn't it?? and explain it to you in broader terms if you're interested.

Wow, thats a lot of numbers there, you seem to know your engine fairly well! I haven't taken the route of rebuilding my engine, what prompted you to do it? I'm currently short on garage space, so I won't be getting around to it for a while. 400 would be a bit excessive for me, good luck with that. I believe that the Holleys are the best you can get, I have an Edelbrock and its a bit fiddley, but never been difficult to adjust.

It seems to be not your first Classic, have you had one before or do you have a few now? I've had mine for over three years.

Now that we're talking about engines, is changing lifters a big or a small job, I heard that they were making it smoke a bit at start after sitting for a while(ford 289)? If I was in there would you think I should do anything else?

Yep, thats me in the blue Mustang, always happy to have a chat and take a bit of advise from anyone, feel free to say Hi if you see me at any of the shows.

I think you'll find the problem is not the lifters But the Valve seals/guides .. If you do a vacuum pressure test on your intake manifold and let me now the reading you get I can answer the question properly for you. Always happy to help/advise where I can..
Classic American car's don't talk to me about them I've never been without one lol......

I suppose you could say I know my engines being working on them all my life I was lucky enough to have had a father who was interested in nothing else but American car's. So, from a very early age he had me in under the bonnet... I completely stripped and rebuild my first V8 at 16 years old.. I'm 39 now... And it ran lol To my surprise.. but you can never truly know everything there is to know alway something new to learn on every motor every hart beats differently . That engine in my previous post was actually one that I'm building for someone else.... RSD who is not actually a member here anymore but that's a discussion/subject best not discussed in this thread.

Next time I see you at a show Ill tap you on the shoulder and say hi..

    Sam

Any pics, Sam ? I'm always interested in the DIY aspect - was going to do something similar to a Triumph Stag a while ago, but it's not an engine I wanted to learn on.

Did you have to get the block overbored or anything like that ? Is it acceptable to bring a block to an engineering works and have them do that, and just give it to you back for you to build out - or do they insist on something more ?

They're happy (maybe happier) for you to bring the block alone, or accompanied with any other bits and pieces. They don't generally clean it all perfectly afterwards so you'll need to make sure that all the swarf is gone before you rebuild. From what I've read, a Stag engine would be a bit of a learning curve. I rebuilt a triumph 6 cylinder and found it easy enough, apart from all the heavy lifting

Some of them will rebuild the engine for you if you like.

Ring Westward Engineering and/or Loftus Farrell and see what they say and charge.

I used Loftus Farrell when rebuilding my 230SL motor. I measured the bores and went to first oversize and just brough him the block, crank, and pistons. The crank looked perfect so they just polished it and fitted new standard bearings.

If the crank or bores are damaged it is best to let them order the bearings / pistons to suit the way they will machine them.

Loftus Farrell also acid cleaned my block and I got everything back spotless, and they did a terrific job on the cylinder head ! !
