Diet Coke.

I've been trying to wean myself off excess consumption of sugar as of late. One of my first moves was to cut out the Coke as it's obviously a massive source of sugar in anyones diet. I'm just wondering though, if I move over to Diet Coke or Coke Zero (what is the difference between these anyway), is there anything in either that would be harmful to keep-fit regime?

I know in an ideal world I wouldn't drink any soda, but it's simply not practical so no suggestions to that effect.

I know everyone's gonna start shouting "water only" but tbh I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

    Diet coke = girly/accuired taste
Coke Zero = Grrrr man/normal coke taste (with no kcals)

    Artificial sweetners are bad.

Apparently asparatame was alleged to be bad for people with MS, my neurologist tells me there is no evidence of this...hence I continue to drink Diet Coke.

LOL, it is "man" coke since many macho men would refuse to buy a "diet" product for fear of looking like a ponce  Same as pepsi max, and now 7-up have changed too. Sly marketers.

Coke zero does taste very like real coke.

Stuff is full of caffeine which is a diuretic (make you pee) so it is not particularly good for hydration.

Diet drinks make you absorb alcohol more quickly, so you get to the same level of drunkeness while drinking less, and because you are drinking diet mixers instead of regular you are taking in far less calories to get to the usuall level of tipsiness you enjoy.

Very interesting, always wondered why morgan's and diet coke hits me harder than scotch on the rocks!

Is diet coke not just coke without sugar?

No, I believe it is not.
Coke zero does not tast like coke, it tastes like a mix of diet coke and coke.

The caffeine in the coke also makes your body create adrenalin. The adrenaline boosts glucose production, which if you are running from a mammoth is a good thing, but if you are sitting on a bus causes an insulin spike and then consequently a sugar low.

Caffeine also reduces the effect of adenosine which your body uses to regulate adrenaline and dopamine (the feel good stuff) in your system. If you are "feeling good" the whole time you can become somewhat immune. Bang, thats when the mammoth gets ya.

Well, Cork Zero is my tipple of choice, but reading an article on Slashdot recently, it has been proven than an ingredient in both Pepsi Max and Fanta damages your DNA.

sure the ingredients for regular coke are mixed into two different substances then shipped like that.....when they are being shipped whatever is in the vats in whatever concentration is technically a biohazard and has big toxic signs all over it(or so im told :o) and its only when the two substances are mixed and diluted with water that its actualy safe to drink

coke=sexy taste but for me its a rare treat at the mo

diet coke=muck taste and i tried to become accustomed to it but it wasnt happening

    coke zero= never tried it

club orange and club lemon in a rock shandy like concoction= sex also

So the moral is don't drink either?

Coke = bad (loads of sugar and calories and stuff)

Diet Coke = bad (loads of artificial muck)

Coke Zero = bad (as above plus it does NOT taste like coke, it tastes like muck)

I doubt drinking "muck" is so good for you either. Worms and fertilisers and all sorts in muck.

When I say damages your DNA, I mean it. It damages parts of your cells that control Mitosis, or cell division.

    Sodium benzoate or something?
Hardly surprising that it is not the best for you.

Well if it is sodium benzoate that the article was about, yeah, they linked it to cancer. Don't know how credible it is though.

Yep and morgans spiced is only 35% while most scotch is 40%. Also since your intake of alcohol is less your intake of hangover inducing cogeners is less.

It has phosphoric acid which is going to be very concentrated when undiluted. This is used to clean rust from stainless and treat welds so they will not rust. Coke is a very good cleaner for copper and other metals. People make a big deal since it can strip copper but the acid in your stomach is far far stronger

diet club orange is my favourite, though they recently "improved the taste" still good and about 10% orange juice, so not calorie free.

Probably better to ingest it than be obese though. Everything give you cancer these days anyway...

The new Diet Club orange is great, tastes just like real Club Orange. The Club Light stuff was mank.

Most of them use aspartame as the sugar substitute, brand name Nutrisweet. Diet Club Orange uses sucralose, brand name Splenda.

Coke Zero is sexy! Not as sexy as Coke but pretty damn close plus only 1.5 calories/250ml as opposed to 250 calories/250ml in regular Coke! Think thats pretty accurate anyways.

    I believe coke is 149kcal per 500ml.
I'll have a look at lunch.
While we are talking about things in drinks. Does anybody know if gelatine is used to stabilize the beta carotene in rock shandy?

    210kcal per 500ml.
