Want drama? Want high stakes? "The Big Donor Show" has ‘em. This Friday three patients will compete to receive a kidney from a terminally ill young woman, 37-year-old "Lisa." Dutch TV channel BNN and the producers of "Big Brother" have brainstormed to produce "Big Donor Show." The show, which will be broadcast as a single episode live on BNN this Friday, will show the three "contestants" (each of whom is a match for Lisa’s organs) who will compete for one of her kidneys.

Viewers can also participate in the decision by sending text messages to Lisa during the 80 minutes that it is on air.

Dutch Education and Culture Minister Ronald Plasterk, a molecular biologist and former chief of the Dutch Cancer Institute commented: "The intention of the program to get more attention for organ donation may be applaudable. However based on the information I now have, the program appears to me to be inappropriate and unethical because it is a competition."

BNN is known for airing other controversial reality TV shows, including one called "Shooting and Swallowing" illustrating the impact of drug use, and another show on sex called "This is How You Screw." Classy.

Think reality TV is getting out of control? Check out all of Bodog’s wacky reality TV odds including, "Will America’s Got Talent host David Hasselhoff eat a hamburger on screen during season 2 of the show?" Place your bets, folks.

Watching big brother makes me want to ripp out my organs, so at least this show gives something back.

The Dutch are weird. They have a show where the winner gets a kidney. And the watchers gradually turn into (doner) kebabs. Or am I picking it up wrong?

    Are you serious or sarcastic?

I think it was a brilliant idea, and has already had a good effect, 12,000 people have joined the organ doner list in the Netherlands since it was announced as a hoax. Anything that highlights the need for organ donations is good. And it is not like the people involved were taken for a ride, they knew exactly what was going on.

It certainly had the desired effect - it was all over the world's media the past week (even our lovely Prime Time)

I'd give MY organ to Miriam O Callaghan any day of the week...........

I was joking, randomname2005. Did they really get 12,000 new donors? That's impressive.

I thought you were, but just wanted to make sure ;)

Thats the figure they had on the news, now whats the possibility of it getting a few more people to carry organ donor cards in Ireland?
