Contract worries...

Im not sure If this is in the right forum but I'll ask and if there's another more appropriate forum then maybe someone could move it there for me :)

Anyway, I'm just wondering whats the deal with work contracts? I've been working here since the start of December and I haven't been given a contract. I'm wondering about this because I've been given a lot of jobs to do that weren't mentioned to me in my interview and so far as I know if I don't have a contract then I can just refuse to them. I'm also worried that they can just turn around and fire me whenever they want as well. I know that they hired me because I said I would accept low wages, and I also know that a lot of more experianced people went for the job, and I feel maybe my bosses think they can make me do jobs that I'm not supposed to do because of this. I work in a solicitors office so I'm sure they would now better than to copromise my rights because I could bring them to court, but maybe they think they can get away with it because of my own lack of experience with law.
    Can anyone help?

    Ask for a contract.

Prob better suited for Work or Legal but what puzzles me is that they pay you without a contractual agreement.
Without a contract you are not really working for them/don't exist except in payroll sense. Also holidays/perks are not defined.

    Go down to HR now.

Ask boss for a contract. It's illegal for you not to be supplied with one. Here's a helpful link.

Contract of Employment and for future reference there is a Work & Jobs forum.

Print out the page from the citizens information site and bring it with you for reference in the unlikely event you have a problem. I've been several months without contracts in various positions, it's never been intentional, just bureaucracy and inept HR. I'm sure you'll have no problem.

Also, I don't doubt that your contract when it does arrive will make note of your duties plus additional duties required so their arses are covered. Don't be afraid to try to renogitiate after the end of any probationary period, particularly if your duties and responsibilities increase.

by you working for them and them paying you there is a contract in place.

they can fire you within the first year and only have to give you 1 weeks notice.

Well, if there was a contract in place then they must of drugged me to get me to sign it cos I sure don't remember! I always thought contract implied there was some sort of list of terms and duties that I had to sign and agree with?
I havent asked about it yet, I posted here to see if it was even worth asking.

you don't have to sign anything for a contract to be in place, buy going to work and doing the job and them paying you, that is a contract
