    hi,
i bought a bike a few months ago, that i saw in Bike buyers guide, from a shop in dublin. i paid my deposit and received a handwritten receipt. the week after i received the bike and paid the rest of the money in cash.

i asked him about the tax for the bike and he said that he had to send a form off to the tax office (change of ownership form) before i could tax it. i didn't know at the time that i had to sign this form.

anyway, i dont know if the bike is in my name now or not, and i still have not received anything from the tax office.

should i just wait another while and see what happens? what happens if i am checked by the guards?
    any advice appreciated!

a few months, you should have the tax book by now, it is sent to the dept. of the environment in Co. Clare who issue the new one under your name.He may have not just sent it in. Also the procedure for the tax book is different for a dealer than for a private sale , where you do have to sign it once the deal is done and the seller would post it off after the buyers details have been filled in.Go to
    http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/PublicationsDocuments/FileDownLoad,499,en.pdf

and you can get more information

Contact the dealer and tell him you haven't heard anything from the tax office. TBH most dealers wouldn't have too much of a problem throwing "your signature" on the form. Most shops aren't that, well... customer facing, so it you get tones that hit at "what are you doing wasting my time?", firmly remind him who's the customer.

Contact your local tax office and see if they have the bike in your name. Sometimes this info takes a while to change and they could still have it in the name of the owner.

You can get on to the department of the environment (heritage and local government), in Shannon, and get them to check if you're down as the owner, they should basically confirm or deny your name is down as the owner.

If they confirm the bike's in your name we can presume the vehicle reg document was lost in the post - it's a pretty straightforward replacement form you fill out and get stamped by the cops. (RF 134)

If it's still in the shops or the previous owner's anme it's a little trickier, but either the Tax office or Dept of the Environment will be able to point you in the right direction

i rang the dealer about it alright. he said he'd post me the form to sign. that was about six weeks ago...
i'll ring my local tax office tomorrow and check who's name its in.
i'm just worried that there might be something fishy about the bike!!!
    thanks

OP, if you need the number for shannon pm me, im not sure about throwing it up on here. Like has been said, shannon will tell you if it is in your name, all you need to give them is the registration number. If it is, just ask them to reissue the VLC, if not its still not the end of the world.

If the dealer is not sorting this out for you, (and six weeks is far too long) you can ask shannon to send you a form which you can sign, witnessed by a commissioner for oaths/solicitor etc. This form will allow them to put the bike in your name without a taxbook. You may also need a bike shop to confirm the chassis number on the form for you, Im not sure.

    Hi Lads.

you can actually just go to your local tax office and pick up the form fill it out have it stamped by the garda you'll also need a a letter of declaration from a solicitor declaring that the bike is actually yours bring that and the form that you have got stamped by the garda back to the tax office with the sum of 12euro which is what they charge for the service and that's about it roughly 2 weeks later you receive your logbook.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the shop to sort this out that's just not going to happen at this stage!! chances are that they mislaid/lose that logbook... they have your cash and are not that bothered anymore really!!

As for it being a dodgy bike!!! Provided you got the bike from a reputable dealer I wouldn't worry about that....... The chances of it been dodgy are slim to none........... no dealer "IN HIS RITE MIND" will buy a bike or take one as trading in..... without checking all the necessary numbers on the bike against the logbook..

How do I know this? Many years in the trade.

hope you get it sorted out I know there is nothing more frustrating than trying to explain the circumstances to the garda if you get stoped
