Just to let you know that JSMS version 3 has been released. This is a free open source application (initially developed on my Mac) which speeds up and simplifies sending text messages (works for Meteor, O2 & Vodafone). Read more and download here:

    http://jsmsirl.sourceforge.net/Home.html

    Whats new?

    Version 3 includes:

    -Password encryption
-Automatic proxy detection- If you are behind a proxy JSMS should auto-detect your proxy settings.
-General bug fixes & code cleanup

Please let me know if you find any bugs or general feedback is appreciated...
    Cheers.

I've downloaded it (Mac version) from 2 different mirrors as a .zip file but it never unzips. It stops at 100% and just sits there.

As a test I d/l the linux version zip file and it unzipped fine.

Ok it unzips now but I get

"You cannot open the application "JSMS" because it may be damaged or incomplete"

when I try to run it. If I show package contents and open all the dirs I find JSMS.jar. Clicking on this starts the app. PowerMac Dual G5 2GHz - 10.4.9.

Sorry I will have to look into that. In the meantime this download 'should' hopefully work

Maybe it's me or my system but this still won't work for me.
I have the latest Java installed but I get no reaction at all when I double click the icon. Nothing !! I have to navigate through the directories to find the .jar file still. When I do this it doesn't find the prefs file or the phonenumbers file.

I think I know what the problem is. Mac OS 10 thinks that this application is in your trash can (I know this is weird but it happened me a few weeks ago & I got the solution on an Apple forum). If you open the 'Terminal' application and type

    rm -r ~/.Trash/*.*

This will delete everything from your trash can (more effective than doing this via the GUI).

Now try and run the application. I would recommend putting the app into a folder 'JSMS' inside your 'Applications' folder before running.

If this still doesnt work please let me know the result of running the app from the command line. E.g.

    open -a /Applications/JSMS/JSMS.app

I will check later and see if I can get to the bottom of this. Maybe I need to package the application as a dmg for download. In the meantime the Linux version (run JSMS.jar) should work fine on a Mac.

    seems to work grand.. cheers

Also works grand here - thank you so much this is brilliant :D

I realize you're working on this in your spare time and that you probably have this planned already, but can I make a few feature suggestions for whenever you get around to it?

One would be an option to change your PIN even after you've saved it. I know you can delete the text file but it'd be good to have it built into the GUI.

More important would be the ability to send to multiple contacts - maybe a window with check boxes could work rather than a drop down list?

I'd offer to help but really don't have a clue about programming beyond web scripting :(

But as I said, nice work, really really handy! :D

That would seem like something that might only need to be done very seldom for most people. One of the things I'm trying to do with this program is keep the GUI as simple and with as little clutter as possible. If I add more buttons, menus, etc. things start getting confusing. I prefer to have the app running in the bottom corner of the screen all day as small as possible.

Yes this is something some people have asked for. Maybe if I get time I can add this into the app. (If any Java programmers are out there & want to help out let me know)

    Cheers enjoy the program!!!

If you are a Vodafone or O2 user please let me know if JSMS is working ok for you. (I dont have a login to test these accounts)

I've installed this and it works fine once I created a txt file for the phonebook however it won't save my prefs so it keeps asking for number/pass and it keeps asking to download my phonebook over and over on meteor.

Any ideas how I can get this to save prefs including user/pass?

    I'm sure its something simple...

Hmm only thing I can think is that you don't have the correct permissions on the file MeteorLogin.txt Can you try and edit that file manually? Paste the following into it, SAVE IT and relaunch JSMS:

    0854556655,null,Meteor,false,true

(where 0854556655 is changed to your mobile number)

    Good luck!

Nice, and it works fine. Although it would be nice to be able to do this on a once-off basis, rahter than making a group and then deleting it, something like the 'send to many' feature on newer Nokias.

As for the pin change (and any other similar, lesser-used features that may result in a cluttered interface), perhaps they could be put in the menu bar? That way they wouldn't get in the way and yet wouldn't be far away if a user wanted them. I don't know what you think about this, but my gut feeling is that when a user has to edit a text file to do something, it's a bad sign. This is especially true on a Mac, the intuitive GUI of which is a major selling point.

Sorry I don't mean to be coming across as demanding or negative, I LOVE this thing! :D Merely trying to offer some constructive criticism.

thats fixed it, now working fine and I'm veryy happy

Here's another suggestion, why not make it a widget?
would be nice to always have it open in the background ready to send and being able to access it while checking other widgets

Very impressed with it, good work indeed and happy to be able to use this on my mac and multitext on my windows machine

Yes I would love to have this as a widget also, but I really don't have much javascript experience. If anyone knows how to convert my Java code to widget form please let me know (it would be great if it could read from the built in Mac Address Book application which I sync with my mobile phone)

Yes I know this is bad design but to be honest initially when I "threw" this app together it was selfishly ;) intended for my own use so I didn't care about a fancy GUI or any of that. Since it has become popular I decided to put the code on sourceforge to make it open to anyone to add bits like you and others suggest. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you have any mates who are software designers tell em to join my project and give a hand writing the code. (this is especially true now as I am going travelling for 12 months in August and won't be using or developing JSMS during that time).

Thanks for the suggestions though. Feel free to document any features you would like on the project page:

Yep, I fully realize this, don't worry! I was a Linux user once upon a time so I'm well used to this :p

Unfortunately I don't have any mates who are software designers but if I happen to find one I'll let them know about your project - in the meantime thanks for a great app! :D

Sadly I'm not that good at javascript, would be interesting to look into it and work towards developing a widget, lets hope the dev of JSMS continues after your gone traveling

could JSMS be easily made into a java applet and displayed in a widget that way, would be web based but atleast it would work...could setup a number of mirrors to host it perhaps, my understanding of creating a widget is poor so I could be wrong :)

Might not be exactly what you were talking about, but version 3.0.4 will bring you back to the login window so you can do a pin change if your login is found to be invalid.

By the way, this program accepts phone book contacts which have been exported from Floats Mobile Agent. (I think this is a Windows only program supporting Sony Ericsson phones)

Just save te exported file with the name PhoneNumbers.txt in your JSMS folder and when you launch JSMS it will recognise the FMA format and load your contacts.
