tales from a road trip

Work colleague says, look, mk1 scirocco on e-bay. doesn't look half bad. I reply, I always liked them. Me too he says. Let the bidding commence 1 week later the two of us are driving onto the ferry with a toolbox, walkie talkies and jump starter in the boot. The RAC route planner reckoned we could do the 250 miles in 5hrs but we reckoned we could do it in 4.Route planners don't get lost. 6 hrs later we arrive at the destination. Cursory look over the car, fluids and alternator checked, then we're off. Now, we had left holyhead at 1:30 pm and got there by 7:30. We are now leaving at 8 to catch the 02:30 ferry back. That didn't leave a huge margin for problems. Thankfully It ran without any trouble and we even got a sleep on the boat. The car's bodywork is a bit rougher than we hoped, but the chassis and mechanicals are great. Typical e-bay scenario when you aren't spending a lot of money. Still, even though I was knackered, I have to say I love a road trip and thoroughly enjoyed that one. the other fella is delighted with the car, and I would do it again in the morning. So when I see the posts saying " looking to transport classic from uk", all I can say is ROAD TRIP. It's an integral part of owning the car. Collect it yourself. What could possibly go wrong.

Loads can go wrong. But you'll get home eventually. The more that goes wrong the more interesting the story.

    Photos please !!

I agree with the whole Road Trip thing, it gives great memories, though sometimes you dont realise it at the time, when things go wrong !

I missed the chance last year to drive a Cobra replica back from the South of England...............still kicking myself !! It would have been cold but fun !!

One of the perks of importing Classics from the continent is that I have the option to decide to drive a car over myself if I feel like it :D , instead of having it shipped. All of my cars are generally always in the sort of condition, that they are well able to handle throwing 3-400 miles at them, so touch wood it has so far always been virtually trouble free...

Worst issues I have encountered over the years are a blocked fuel filter in a Mercedes W111 Coupe, a broken off indicator stalk in a Porsche 912 Targa, and a non-charging alternator in VW Karmann Ghia...

Here are few of pics of a couple of trips that I did in the last year:
