    Hi

I'm thinking of getting a home theatre system and have seen the Sony HT-DDW890 on pixmania.

I don't know much about these things so could anyone tell me:

    1. If this system is any good?

    2. Is that a good price?

    3. Will I be able to connect NTL Digital, DVD player, PS2 and Wii to it and then just have one output to the TV?

I hope to use this with both a TV and a projector.

The projector should have component and HDMI inputs but the TV is an old CRT so only has SCART input.

The DVD player is old but has optical out.

    1. at that price, yes.

    2. yes.

    3. yes.

you can connect the DVD and PS2 up with optical for sound and then composite for video. then use the standard phono inputs for the NTL box audio with composite for video. and then use component with the Wii.

it has standard video output for your old crt and has both HDMI and component outs for your projector. the only thing i have found with all sony hdmi amps so far (haven't set one of these up yet (although i assume it's the same)) is that only HDMI inputs can be routed thru the HDMI output. so in your case where there are no HDMI inputs, you can't use HDMI to connect your projector and will have to use component.

I was wondering about that alright. I'm going to be laying cables to the projector under the floor so I might just throw down a HDMI one in case I upgrade any of my stuff.

    Thanks for the info.

    yeah do that.

i've set up loads of pioneer, denon etc and they route all signals through the HDMI but the sony ones (namely STR-DA1200) only outputs the HDMI input through HDMI.

anyway for that money, its a great kit! especially that its 6.1!!!

Would you be able to recommend where I could get all the cables I'll need?

The most urgent would be the HDMI and Component to go to the projector as they need to go in before I put the floor down. I say I'd need between 5 and 10 metres of each.

I've been looking around but there seem to be loads of different types of both so I'm not sure what I actually need.

HDMI in 10M will cost about 100 quid. cant remember how much a component that long would cost.

opticals are about 15 quid each and composite cables then are about 6 quid each.

peats or alliance electric would have them

Or you could try one of the Ebay shops e.g. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Cables4all

I have bought cables online a lot cheaper than those available instore here in Ireland and for HDMI I don't think it's worth spending a small fortune on cables as the signal is digital and less prone to interference.

Coincidentally, I bought a DDW590 from Pixmania last week, it's still sitting at home waiting to be hooked up as I am waiting for audio cables to be delivered :) . Very good specs for the price and I did a lot of research.

Will post some feedback when I get hooked up.

Thanks for the link starman. They seem like decent prices.

I've come to the realisation that the cables probably won't fit under my floor without being very noticeable. :( So I guess I don't need them as urgently any more.

I ordered the DDW890 from pixmania on Saturday but it hasn't even been validated yet. They probably want a fax of my driver's licence or something. Looking forward to getting it though!

Pixmania didn't ask me for any documentation for validation, took a few days to process the order though. DHL tracking was useful also to know when the package was arriving.

Got it all set up a few days ago, so far I am quite impressed. Auto-calibration works well, good solid, clear sound from the speakers. Lots of options for different sound modes, etc. The speakers themselves are nice looking, more a walnut colour than an orangey cherry colour that was used for the previous model.

I do have a minor quibble regarding a slightly audible hum coming from the sub-woofer, even when the amp is turned off. It can't be an earth loop as the subwoofer is double insulated i.e. is not earthed. It's not too bad but if you listen for it, it is there during quiet TV/movie scenes.

Anyone else seen this with Sony subwoofers?
