Following a thread about the Nikon d 40, i believe some of the better higher specd p & s would be a better bet , for instance the PANASONIC Lumix DMC-FZ8EF .

Do most people here solely use there SLR, or with the increased spec on recent p & s , and there handiness to use & portabliity do you use them a little bit, or do you even possess a p & s .

    do you use a p & s 21 votes

I have a Fuji S5500. Never use it - D70 all the way.

I'll be curious to see how the Sigma DP-1 fairs. The first compact camera with a APS-C size sensor.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5200 for a few years now, taken a couple of thousand photos with it, mostly from a convenience point of view, but also quite a few "serious" ones. It's a great camera, macro lens is excellent, no manual focus or aperture though... I'll try and dig out some photos I've taken with it, but I use it pretty much anywhere I'd be a little nervous about bringing the D80 or where the full kit is too bulky/nerdy. For example the pub :)

people who bring cameras into pubs deserve to be hung from their toenails.

Hahahaha! :D You've been the subject of some compromising photos at a work party, yeah? Bunches of photos from a good night out are always good for a laugh and for lunchtime conversation IMHO...

    I have a Samsung NV10 and it's a little gem!
Into the shirt pocket and off you go.
Great for bringing to the pub.
Comes with a free toenail clippers...

Ah, here's an example from the Coolpix 5200. I'm not gonna win any prizes for it or anything, but I've printed it at around 600mm x 420mm with very little processing and it's excellent...

Here are some pictures taken at Wembley, with my NV10.
I'd never have managed an SLR for the weekend and would have hated to miss the chance to capture the occasion.

a colleague was just asking me if there's such a thing as a pocket sized P&S with negligible shutter lag?

i suppose i better supply my usage, i have a 3 year old olympus 765 , which i really like, its a super lens , and am using it a lot now ; so less bulky than my d50, and i look so less conspicuos , when shooting in odd/dangerous locations !
It has a viewfinder, 10 x optical lens, A/P/ S /M dial modes , iso and white balancing can be set.
Only downside , small sensor, and lens is fixed.

Rather than getting a new lens for the d50, for my next photography purchase i was considering getting an image stabilsed panasonic !

    ha haaa.......
i once produced a Canon EOS 1 DS complete with external flash in a nite spot once and nearly got arrested, beaten up and ejected, but yeah! not really the thing to do - lots of nervous punters about etc. :)

i got a P&S for the convenience of having a camera with me at most times - don't always have an SLR with me and have missed out at times. it's handy to be able to put it in your pocket and still have the capacity to take a reasonable photograph.
so really i use a P&S and also an SLR regularly

btw i got a Canon G7 - seems ok for what i want.

Shutter lag is much greater on a pocket point and shoot unfortunately... You learn to live with it though, prefocusing or using manual focus will eliminate most of the lag.

I have a great little 8mp Sony. Really good quality and pocket sized. I only use it for when I'm out boozing though :)

If the G8 has a RAW function, and slightly faster glass...I'll bu that. Otherwise...nah.

I enjoy looking like I don't know how to take pictures with a P&S...

    I have two P&S -

A SonyEricsson K800i which is 3.2Mpix and I use regularly and doubles as a phone ...

A Canon Sureshot S400 ... with a broken LCD screen ... still works but pretty useless without the screen ...

I have a Canon something or other 430 that I use sometimes and my wife and kid uses. I also just ordered on of these which is a video camera/5MP still camera. This is strictly to record my small twins while they are not aware of it. Anytime I get my bigger camcorder out, they're straight up licking the lens or pulling at the LCD screen. This new one is splashproof so hopefully it will do as a holiday camcorder/camera.
I generally don't like using a P&S in case I get a great picture and then it's only 3 MP and it's soft and noisy and stuff...

i've yet to see a single photo taken on a night out in a pub which is worthy of keeping. just a pet hate of mine, seeing blurry, badly exposed photo after blurry, badly exposed photo of drunk people.
