Australian pub bars heterosexuals

A gay pub in the city of Melbourne has won the right to ban heterosexuals - the first time such legislation has been passed in Australia.
The Victorian state civil and administrative tribunal ruled the Peel Hotel could ban patrons based on their sexual orientation.

The pub's management said the move would stop groups of heterosexual men and women abusing gay people.

Civil liberties groups have supported the decision.

    'Safe balance'

The tribunal's president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says.

Managers complained raucous hen nights and stag parties created a poisonous atmosphere for its gay clientele, our correspondent says.

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," the hotel's manager, Tom McFeely, told Australian radio, according to the Reuters news agency.

Mr McFeely says he wants a "safe balance"

He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men.

Civil liberties groups said homosexuals should be allowed to relax in places without fear of bullying or intimidation.

Australia's equal opportunity laws prevent discrimination based on race, religion or sexuality.

    IT'S HETEROPHOBIC I TELLS YA!!!!!

Seriously though how do they run a gay check?

I would imagine that gay men would get pretty sick of being treated like animals in a zoo by some crowds fairly quickly, so I can see their point. I'm surprised it would be legal, but I'm not an expert on the Astralian legal system.

How are they going to enforce it? Make out with the bouncer to get in?

Think of the uproar if there was a club that banned gay people.

More importantly, would you get away with having a bar that said "No gay people allowed"?

    this part here:
He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men.

is the one that bothers me most. None of the 2,000 venues are "Exclusively" heterosexual. It's ridiculously discriminatory.

If the title of this thread was "Australian pub bars maoris/aborigines/jews/blacks/hispanics/women/travellers/blind people/handicapped people/{insert minority here}" there'd be fcukin' uproar. And rightly so. Just cos' you're discriminating against the majority doesn't make it ok.

    Positive discrimination, is still discrimination.

Well I suppose if you're going to live in a right-wing, racist society full of obnoxious jocks, then gay people probably do need that little extra protection.

Young, single, straight white men have become the most discriminated against section of society. But that's ok as long as they keep topping themselves in record numbers.

Sounds like bull***t to me. You dont need legislation to eject or refuse admission to anyone who might upset your regulars by sneering at them etc. Just like you dont have to book hens if you dont want them in your establishment.

Interesting that the guy thinks that legislation to allow discrimination based on sexual orientation is a "safe balance"..wonder what hed say if the boot was on the other foot

I read that article more as if the bar was covering themselves for when they throw out the next hen party for no apparent reason because they have just dropped in to look at the funny gays.

I don't get it? Surely passing such legislation is just foot in the door for heterosexuals only bars... And why don't they do it the way that it's done in dublin? The bouncers just stopping anyone who looks like they'll cause trouble...

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a girl a coûple of weeks back.
HER: I heard that your cousin Mikey is Gay.
    ME: Yeah, so.
HER: Give him my number will you.
    ME: Why?
HER: Because I love "the gays"
    ME: WTF?????

How can someone chose to like somebody just because of the sexual preference? OK, you are a dickhead but you are gay so I still like you??

Then I said - What about lesbiens?
    HER: No I hate them.

    Some people, eh?

I can see why they might do this... lot of gay people avoid the george on a Sunday night now because of the gawking crowds.

Don't think the Melbourne bar is discriminating against straight people, just reserving to right to keep it a mostly gay bar and satisfy the regular clientel. Don't see a problem with that.

Well a lot of gay bars here do that, if they think you are straight you don't get in. Mainly the lesbo places though.

Women like that are such idiots. I can see why they want to keep the bar gay only. Perhaps decking the place out with posters of men fisting would keep the casual gay tourists away when faced with the realities of homosexuality.

Lol, I'd say that might keep most gay people away too!

    WooHoo!

Joy of Joys a select few gay people have proven that reverse discrimination is there. Muahahahahah! I have been trying to find a reference like this for a week! If this place had rep I would give the op +10!

Yes. I take the point that not all gay men are into fisting but plenty are.

Thats how it actually looks without any digital manipulation you usually see in the press. It's hard to keep his ego in.

"Exclusively gay" = No straight men/women in my book.

Even if it didn't, I doubt that straight people/couples would be made feel welcome in such an establishment. And that should be unacceptable, reagrdless of sexual orientation/creed/ethnicity.

In their defence, I can kinda understand it when it comes to lesbians (I've stated so in another thread) because of the "C'mere and I'll turn ya straight..........you don't know what you're missing love" etc., but as for the men, are there really gangs of blokes and birds standing around laughing, pointing and taking pics? How bad is it? Cos if its that bad, then they'd be better off addressing the problem itself, as opposed to addressing the symptoms/manifestation of serious homophobic behaviour.

They were giving away T-shirts in my local with an Amstel promo a couple of weeks ago. The slogans were :

"I'm the only GAA in the village"

    and

"Been there, done that, bought the Taoiseach"

Funniest part is that Bertie drinks there regularly.

There is a quote from the owner of the bar by the OP,

"If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance,"

That does not sound like he's going for "Exclusively gay". Those words come from the article author.

I don't get it, my idea of having a good night on the lash isn't popping into a pub and laughing at the funny gays. I'm sure even at that point the manager still had the right to tell them to fùck off.

God, I wonder if the Surf Club down in Summer Bay is taking a similiar stance?

Gays Only=Sexual discrimination which ever way you look at it.If any pub had a straights only policy, even a tacit one, they'd be sued, defamed and probably closed down. This sort of bull**** makes me angry, likewise in America the constant references to "first black man to.." or "best paid black woman.." or even more annoying "music of black origin".Music can have alot of things-tone,timbre,melody,bass,treble,whatever butt it cannot have colour. This sort of thing is actually strengthening polarity between gays and straights, blacks and whites and **** knows what else.

I know it's been said but lol @ "McFeely". Them gays are all big feelers! Teehee. Also, as Bottle said, do they plan to run gay checks or what?! I mean, I dunno, it all sounds a bit mad to me! And all of this "safe balance" crap! What does that even mean?

"Uh-oh! Pub's tilting! Send in more gays!"

I used to do security for a Pub In sydney in Oxford St. We where an on call firm as the place was all gay and there was never much trouble.
The only time we where ever called in was escort sh1t scared straight people out who had wondered in while pissed and realised later..

I think its a good thing for a few bars to have these polices

This has been going on for years in London, but they are more discrete because the bleeding heart liberals would be up in arms otherwise. My friends in London used to go the gay bars so as not to get hassled by men, and they used to come out with the same old tired lines of how it was great to be able to hang out in clubs like 'Heaven' had have no one chat you up (yeah yeah yeah YAWN !!!). But, around 1995 the clubs had had enough and started turning them away, saying things like "sorry members only" or "you have had enough to drink", which of course we thought was really funny, and gave the girls a right good slagging over it.

These where not humanitys greatest samples I will grant you that ... mostly eejits who just wanted to wrap themselves around a beer a stare at it all night.

However the reason we kicked them out was they made the clientelle uncomfortable so if the bloke may have had an issue. In fact I can see why some gays bars would not want us , that place was kicking and it was always packed. There was never any real trouble and everyone was 100% into having a good night. I have actually never seen Straight people party to that degree...

I think the success or failure of this law falls on its enforcement , on the whole I cant see many Gay bars picking on straight people.

Then again by the same ethos if Gay bars are allowed ban straight people it does not take a legal genuis to argue the opposite case.
