I am experience very slow download speeds with Utorrent.

There is a red exclamation at the bottom of the page, when I hover over it, It gives me the following message:

"Not Connectable - A Firewall/Router is limiting your traffic, you need to open up a port so others can connect to you"

I've followed all the instructions about logging in to my router/static IP addresses etc

    Still no joy..

    Any ideas people?

    Thanks, Ed

    www.portforward.com

Look up your router details there, and make sure the ports are also open on your firewall.

The problem is, it's telling me...

Welcome to the µTorrent Port Checker.
A test will be performed on your computer to check if the specified port is opened.

    Checking port 31762 on 83.70.220.240...

Error! Port 31762 does not appear to be open.

Please see www.portforward.com for more information about how to map a port.

Please make absolutely sure that PeerGuardian2 or Protowall is allowing utorrent.com (72.20.34.145) in either of those programs. Those of you using ipfilter.dat should make sure the list does not include the website's IP. After making sure of this, re-run this test by refreshing the page (F5).

just switch it off for a minute or so to check if this is blocking your ports.

Check if a firewall is set up on the router itself, that happened to me when i got a new router from eircom, if you set it to low should work...

hmm... tell ya what, why don't you post the link to the legal ;) torrent you are downloading and I can test it here in work and see what the speeds are like.

I personally don't bother with port forwarding as most, if not all, legal torrents are heavily seeded and the need for a specified port is negligable, also i'm behind a load balancer so to put a policy based routing rule in place would limit me to downloading on only 1 WAN connection.

You will only need the port to be properly forwarded if the torrent is nearly dead or being heavily leeched, and like I said this only happens for the majority with illegal torrents... so my help stops there.

And what wonderful help it was.

OP. My setup is like this.

Internet -> My routers IP -> My PC (with firewall)

For this I go to uTorrent and specify a port.
On my software firewall I go to the settings and allow that port into my system.
On my router I tell it to forward all traffic with destination of that port to my PCs IP address.

Have you done those three steps? Are you having a problem with one step in particular.
