Just doing a bit of research here as i am getting a new pc. I understand the Intel core 2 duo is a powerful processor and better that the AMD's. But would a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 2.20Ghz be better than a Core 2 Duo Processor E6300 1.86Ghz all round?

yes and no ,the amds have to clock generally 500mhz more to get the same preformance, core 2 technology is more powerful than am2 and encoding ect.. id just go for a better intel processor or overclock

The Intel is about 50% more expensive than the AMD in your comparison. Question is, is it 50% more powerful?

The E6300 and X2 4200 are roughly are on par with each other trading places depending on the benchmark I'd go with whatevers cheaper.
