    Hi

Does anybody here work in the risk management/treasury department in any of the banks? I am just after finishing my degree in accounting and finance with an emphasis on finance and this is the area I want to get into. In particular what are credit analysis roles like?

This is also the reason why I'm not going to do a masters straight away in September, such as the Finance and Capital Markets in dcu, as there's a more specialised part-time Msc. in Risk Management in the institute of bankers in conjunction with ucd that I'm aiming to do instead after a few years working, anybody doing or know anyone doing this course?

    Thanks

What exactly do you want to know? From what I gather its pretty interesting stuff. You research the clients exposure and so on to analyse what sort of transactions they should be allowed to do (at an investment bank at least)

Yeah I was guessing as much and I'd say it involves carrying out analysis once clients have been given credit to see how interest rate changes and other factors could effect their credit worthiness am I right?

The thing I want to know specifically would be the level and type of maths required. I've seen some roles on websites stating that a maths/statistics degree is required for credit risk roles.

This one for example, credit risk role.

Now my degree wasn't very maths heavy but there was the usual maths and statistics modules in a business course and I also did econometrics in final year which fits with what that postion says about "regression analysis, development, testing and reporting".

Any maths module I did do was usually my best mark, so although I mightn't know the precise stuff I can pick it up very quick.

Ok retail banks would be a totally different story. However all these jobs which require strong maths / stats etc. don't really. You should know the essentials but most importantly display you are eager and willing to learn (And learn quickly) any short comings you may have which are purely technichal.

This sort of work is all done through excel, really you just need to be a whizz with excel.
