Looking at the coverage right now. Mark Little was interviewing Tom Parlon and Parlon stated "I just dropped into the pub next door....er....for a sandwich and..."

The eyes were SWIMMING in his head!

I think Tom Parlon messed up big time at the previous election in 2002, by declaring for the PD's when he could have easily got an FF or an FG 'ticket' as all parties were 'courting' the high-profiler. He would have got in last time even if he was with the 'raving looney party'. He's paid the price this time though. An FF berth would have easily seen him back in and an FG also most likely.

Overall, I was majorly surprised the last time in 2002 that the PD's increased from 4 to 8 seats. Now, its as if the electorate as a whole was just 'slow' back then, and is this time catching up. Hmmmmm

Well, they held a ridiculous amount of power for the few seats they had, it's just this time around, people's focuses were on Health and Justice, which were conveniently dumped on the PDs by Bertier.

I think that view is incorrect. The PD's didnt have these portfolio's dumped on them. Mary Harney volunteered to take on the Health portfolio and pursued it to 'try and sort it out'. She swapped the relatively easy Industry and Trade role which she had for 7 years with 'Mee-haul' Martin.

She was frustrated by the problems in the area, and whilst it is a poisoned chalice and FF did let her have it, it was her and the PD's choice. McDowell wanted Justice from the start, his specialism in terms of legislation, solicitor/barrister background/AG background, etc.

The PD gains the last time were based on the demise of FG where they 'amazingly' picked up a lot of final seats, and disaffected voters.

I personally think the PD's have never garnered a sufficient set of core voters so its only a matter of time before they dissappear. Once Des O'Malley dies, and Mary Harney retires, there wont be much left of the original raison d'te, and of course once FF clean up their act in terms of corruption. That may take longer. Of course, a new set of PD leaders could rise from the ashes, and a new party force in Ireland could develop. But that's an if .......
