    hi

I've just installed Vista Ultimate on my Inspiron 9300 laptop. I have 80 GB Hardrive but there is only 15.5GB Free. I've absolutely nothing installed on it just a clean install Vista so any ideas why this is so??

    thanks

Are you sure its not the other way around and that 15Gigs is being used? Vista needs 15Gb of space to run.

I still had to ask. I wouldn't go reinstalling just yet. Is it freshly installed this morning.

Yep, right out of the box. I ran the setup in XP and did a fresh install on my existing partition. I've been looking through the folders such as program files in case programs from my last operationg system were there but no.

Did you try your System volume Information folder could be that system restore is set to use a lot of hard disk space. Also how about the recycle bin.

Ok I've found the problem. For anyone installing a fresh copy of Vista in XP, Vista will save all your previous files in a folder called windows.old on your c: drive.

windows vista doesnt take up 15g's .......!

i got visa ultimate, takes up about 7 1/2 gig.

maybe so if you count the old o/s that was installed previously.......

Hi there , came up with this problem myself shortly after installing Vista , posted on a thread about it here called " hard drive filling because of Vista , "

Obviously your biggest space hog is the old files , you'll have to delete that for a start , however , shadowcopy and restore take up a huge amount of room and this can be reduced , follow the links in the thread below , basically you open a command line and tell vista how much space to use for shadow copy and how much to use for restore points.

Oh by the way , Vista is a 15GB install on a new machine , dont know how the poster on here got it to 7GB but thats not right , must have compressed something or removed something to get it that small !!
