    tired without doubt.

when im drunk i just loosen up but can still end up 600+ in the green.

played till from 9 to 6am on monday after a 9 hour work day, and had to be in work for 8am.

donked off 2 buyins due to being card dead, and then had to leave work at 1 to go home and sleep.

    thank god for salaries.

Good question. Too early for me in the morning to come to a conclusion on that one. Neither state is good really but I probably go along with the others so far though and say tired is the worst of the two.

God no it's being drunk for me hands down. When you are wrecked tired, yes you can bleed chips, but you tend to play more ABC type of poker.

Whereas when you are drunk, you have a cunning play to bluff an absolute rock off a pot, even after him raising and an Ace appearing on the flop.

Or even better you decide to sit down rat-ars*ed at the €100 omaha game in the Fitz with €500, with Peter Roche sitting on your left hand side with about 15K in front of him, but it's okay cause you have a very cunning plan:confused: This usually ends in a quick taxi trip home after losing the last €100 on brag....

I'd agree with Smurph. When tired you can just play ABC stuff, focus a bit harder and you should be fine.
Drunk can be an absolute disaster.

it actually depends how drunk people get.

if its the level of drunk when which i dont remember anything the night before and wake up covered in ketchup in a bathtub with no trousers on and 4 towels stuffed in the toilet, then yes drunk is worse.

as regards playing abc when tired? not for me. Tired = impatience

    impatience + card dead =
    EV

    Busted Flush,

I can't allow a discussion about the possible short term effects Cocaine use might have on someone's Poker game, compared to the long term effects of same, that's really a discussion for another forum. So I'll just edit your post.

Think it would be funny to ask the two drunk guys on our cash table sunday night Dougie, Standard raise went small blind big blind then 1oo, Talk about a crazy game that started very casual, Heard you pulled back chips after we left well done on a solid tourny. Plenty more to come

I've never played drunk, even at pub games. I do often find myself breaking even or giving back some of my winnings in the last 1 or 2 hundred hands of a long online session though, which is probably a leak. I'd have to say tiredness is worse.

When tired I tend to get impatient, and I find myself going all in on hands that I normally wouldn't go in on. If this works, I tend to wake up pretty quickly though.
I think I might actually play better while drunk, bizarrely, as I find I do better with a bit more aggression in my game.

    cocaine's a hell of a drug

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Ste05

Without doubt it's drunk for me, poor BR management and stupid moves come into my game, over confidence and not really caring enough, if I'm tired I'll just play on auto-pilot, which is certainly not maximising my EV of each play but certainly much much better than playing drunk.

I try not to play when drunk, but when i do i'm much more loose and aggressive - to the point of absurdity!

When tired, I'm liable to do anything - ship the chips in in the hope i'l lose and can then go home (live tournament games - i never play online when tired!).

EDIT: The results of this poll seem to show that maybe we shouldnt play when drunk OR tired - but wheres the fun in that?!

I've never played drunk. Only played very tired once. I played really well and people thought me saying I was tired was good speech play.
I imagine I wouldn't want to play under either condition, but at least when tired you can get periods of awareness and sobriety.

If your tired you'll tend to be more passive and less observant whereas when your drunk you'll be more aggressive and aggresive will work a lot more often so tired is probably worse. Best to avoid playing in either state though obviously!!

playing drunk is certainly a lot more fun that playing tired anyway!

playing drunk has seen me decimate my bankroll more than once.
A few pints and a touch of the gamble on
$50 STT? No let me at 5/10....when it works you feel king of the world
when it doesnt.....oh it stings the next morning

I get extermely lucky when drunk and extremely unlucky when tired. That may not be a true statement, I could just be imagining that!

Last Sat night after a mad night, came home at 4am, opened a bottle of wine, wife went to bed and I logged onto Stars.
By 6 I'd knocked a glass of wine all over the place and fell asleep on the laptop with the buzzer going off in my ear 'YOUR TURN TO ACT - YOUR TURN TO ACT', I'd then wake up, hit raise, then fall back asleep, did this about 5 times till I went busto.

So, for me, inebriated poker, with a pinch of tiredness is -EV.

It's just a pity that the more drunk I get, the bigger my desire to play.

Why are the most fun things usually bad for you?

Almost never play drunk. Not one drink even, if I can avoid it. I treat it like drinking and driving, except I dont drive :)

I know people who do coke in the Irish scene. I'm not puritanical (nor hypocritical) enough to criticise them. But I've never done coke myself though as I think its a drug that turns people into egomaniacs in the long term. Thats for another topic though!

Drink reduces your inhibitions and heightens aggression and emotion. The more of it consumed the greater the effect until almost no logic at all is involved.

Tiredness for most people reduces them to irritatable zombies so they will play more by rote and will be prone to explosive "self-harm" when outdrawn imho.

Ultimately I think drink is much worse but we havent specified relative quantities. Are we talking one or two drinks or a skinful? One bad nights sleep or a 2 day/night marathon?

    DeV.

i had my first go of drunken online poker in a long while the other night, it didn't go too badly, stacking some guy with 1010 vs ak on a kk10 flop helped. thankfully I was talked out of playing 5/10 before the bb got around to me!

Tired for me. I have a heightened sense of awareness so get bored quicker and therefore play more hands nd so on and so forth.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,810 ✭✭✭✭jimmii

If your ahead its a lot more dangerous to be drunk. If your tired and you are ahead your more likely to leave it at that. If your drunk you'll think that its time to move up levels and play stakes where you have about 5 buy-ins just to see how it goes!
