i was browsing youtube today and came across something called a"spud gun/cannon .all it uses is pvc piping,a barbacue igniter and hairspary or any other aerosol to use.its amazingly simple and cost effective.I was thinking about making one and filling it with a bag of loosley packed bbs.when the bag leaves the barrel it would fall to the ground and the 300 or so bbs would continue on in a shotgun effect.

    i was wondering
a}is it legal to use one of these on a skirmish site
    b}would it be practical?

    to find out more about them type in"spud gun"on you tube{i dont know how to put a link on:rolleyes: }

interesting idea alright, paul had something similar at hrta that used a compressor to fill a small reservoir and then a release valve to fire it, he was launching water baloons and paper cups full of bb's with it, the paper cup wouldnt go very far, but the bb's went a good 50ft+

yea ive seen them on youtube aswell, there pretty powerful.the one i was looking at tho only needs a squirt or two from an aerosol can as a propellant, can put a potato thru a tv screen aswell!!+need something to take down that airsoft rc helicopter everyone was talking about!:D

I'd like to mention that technically these could be seen as firearms as I'm sure they fire projectiles at well over 1 joule.

But I guess a car exhaust could be classed as a firearm in this crazy world. Just stick a potato in the exhaust pipe and watch that baby fly!

wouldnt want to go firing potatoes with it, but water balloon or similar would be fine i'd imagine. might have a go at building one next week if i can get supplies in b&q

Edit: of course ill be sure to keep the propellant chamber small enough so that it fires at less than 1 joule! :D

You need very strong PVC piping to do this. The normal stuff will crack and splinter, or just plain explode in your hands. I would use the very thick yellow stuff that thry use for gas lines. It is no fun having something like this basically explode 1ft from your face.. I would also imagine that they are not legal.

Its a very small amount of aerosol. They did this on Brainiac with pringles tubes.

I've first hand experience.. I have not seen the item on brianiac, but the regular PVC tubing you get is very brittle, especially if it gets hot.
Build something that is robust, and you don't have to worry about.
Better safe that sorry. Even little explosions are still explosions

when making combustion based cannons ABS pressure rated pipe is necessary.

reason being ABS will not shatter like PVC pipe, ABS will stretch and tear open and the risk to life and limb is less when using ABS.

in Pneumatics PVC pipe is a must as ABS is not suited to having a constant pressure within it, the pressure generated when using a general combustion cannon is a lot less than the normal pressure 100psi/ 690 KPa pneumatics.

so if you intend on making a combustion cannon, go with ABS pipe.

P.S don't try to make a hybrid cannon on your first go.

    how do you mean hybrid?

hybrid combustion cannons use a combination of pneumatic and combustion cannons.

basically you use compressed air and an alkane gas eg propane gas.

compressed air contains a higher oxygen percentage level per volume than ambient air (as used in normal combustion cannons)
after pumping in your fuel and compressed air you ignite the mix as you would with a generic combustion...with a spark gap.
I'm sure you can find info on them on wiki

sounds waaaaaaaay too complex to be honest, anyway, spud cannons sound like a great idea, but building one is likely to cause controversy over the 1 joule issue, so best to avoid doing it in the first place

listen carefully, as threads like this could from now on result in the OP being banned.

Just because we play airsoft does not mean that any device which can be used to fire projectiles can be discussed here. That is not what this forum is for. Anyone thinking otherwise should stop posting.

Home made gas combustion cannons are potentially lethal devices. As crazyrabbit also said, they are more than likely illegal.

Before you post a new thread about some interesting device which could be used in airsoft, ask yourself, does this have the potential to kill or maim. If it does, don't think you can discuss it here.
