Switching between stereo speakers and headset/microphone in XP

I've got both stereo speakers and a headset(with microphone) set up on my pc, operating system is XP Pro.

Most of the time I prefer to use the speakers, but occasionally I prefer to use the headset. If I want to switch between the two, I change the settings via the sound section of the control panel, but it doesn't actually switch until I reboot. I'd prefer having to reboot each time I switch, is there a way I can avoid rebooting?

    Any help appreciated.

    Why are you changing settings?!

Plug your speakers into your speaker port. Plug the microphone lead into the microphone port.

When you want to use the headset, then just plug the speaker cable from your headset into the headphone output on the speakers(if they have one), or plug it into the speaker port on the PC (taking out the lead to the speakers). If you don't want to be crawling around your PC each time you change, then get a 3.5mm Stereo Doubler. 5 euro in Maplins.

    Cheers for the reply.

All fair enough points except my headset is usb.

Anyway the problem wasn't quite as bad as I thought it was, I just need to restart the application that uses the sound and it switches over, still not ideal, it'd be nice if it could do it automatically, but as far as I can see that's not the way of it in XP.
