Manchester - Where to Stay and things to do?

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for somewhere to stay in Manchester. Not really on a budget, but don't want to go mad altogether. Would be more important to be relatively central etc. We want to head down to Alton Towers for one of the days so I guess proximity to a rail station would be a plus. Danke!

We stayed here once or twice, a grand spot and literally 3 mins walk from Picadilly Train Station http://www.visitnorthwest.com/manchester/gardens.htm

Lots to see and do in Manchester this is a decent website
