so what are your favourite music videos?

i don't really see many anymore and of course most videos have been, and always will be, boring nonsense but occasionally you get ones that are just magnificent - original/provocative/moving/funny/cool.. that really add to the song in a meaningful way..

i think 2 bands deserve special mention..

i know r.e.m. divide people's opinions (i'm very much pro-r.e.m.) but whatever you think about them, it should be recognised that they have had many brilliant videos (and quite a few naff ones too i know! - eg stand, all the way to reno, bad day etc.).. my favourites are:
wolves lower, talk about the passion, so. central rain, finest worksong, pop song 89, low, half a world away, country feedback, nightswimming, crush w. eyeliner, electrolite, daysleeper..

and sigur rós, well if you don't like their music i doubt the videos would do it for ya.. again, i'm very pro-sigur rós myself (i think takk.. is my favourite album ever)..
svefn-g-englar, untitled #1, glosóli and hoppipolla, really amazing if u ask me..

some other favourite videos off the top of my head..
stina nordenstam - little star (gorgeous tinted colours, and stina herself is captivating)
the palace brothers - ohio river boat song (beyond simple in idea and execution, something about it is really beautiful)
the avalanches - frontier psychiatrist (hilarious, especially the cross-dressing pensioner drummer)
american music club - johnny mathis' feet (staggering mix of humour and pathos, eitzel is great in it)

i'm not too up on recent stuff videowise as i said, so what's been good recently?..

right as rain bowsie - they were the golden years.. back then even david gray and the divine comedy were cutting edge!.. i still have video tapes of stuff from 'round then, still watch 'em.. kristin hersh - your ghost, the trash can sinatras - the genius i was, freedy johnson - lucky one, st. etienne - hobart paving.. great stuff.. and of course the wonderful deadpan presence of donal dineen.. and not forgetting the acoustic room and audio on..

If I was to give my top three it would be those two and Radiohead - Street Spirit (fade out).

I was actually looking at those two (above) last Saturday for no particular reason! Good call Zorba!

I've always had a soft spot for the videos for "Burden in my Hand" by Soundgarden, and "The Perfect Drug" by Nine Inch Nails. I thought the "look" of both these videos was pretty awesome.

Instead of making silly little lists, link to the youtube videos for what you can and at least allow us to look at them.

Anyone tried this new LastFM music video thing I've been hearing about? Apparently they're planning to offer every music video in existence. Haven't tried it myself yet though.

    Fine.

Coil's cover of "Tainted Love". Recorded around the same time as Soft Cell's, completely different take on it. Coil took the spin on it as a metaphor for AIDS and the video is set in an AIDS ward and stars Soft Cell's Marc Almond as the angel of death:

LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk is Playing at my House". One of my favourite songs in recent years, I really like the video too:

Tool's "Sober". Fantastic stop motion animation that captures the mood of the song. Adam Jones, Tool's guitarist, directs the videos and worked as a special effects artist on Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park:

The Birthday Party's "Nick the Stripper". This frightens me. The extras were all scum from the area, homeless junkies and lunatics. It's hard to tell which ones are in the band and which ones aren't:

Low's "Canada". Just a lovely song and a great video:

I'm not quite sure but I think he made the music before the film was made.

i have 'bodysong' on DVD but i wouldn't recommend it.. bought it thinking it would be this profound visual study of the human condition backed with innovative music but it was just a mish-mash of unmemorable images and i can't even rem the music so it mustn't have been that good either.. maybe i'll watch it again and i'll see something in it i haven't before..

Great one from last year. Just shows what you can do with no money but lots of imagination: OK GO
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI

Spike Jonze classic. Apparently they had a linguist transcribe the lyrics to the song in reverse, so they could recite it backwards! Pharcyde
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Afx7bqU6GI

The best f**k you to a record label ever: The Replacements
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap0p7mhu4w0

I love this song and the video just makes me wish I had been in this band. They looked like they had a blast: Pavement

And my all-time favourite: Alex Gopher
